My Medical Adventure
I Have been in Trinidad fo just over a week now. And my days have been jam packed. Working at The Port of Spain General Hospital and exploring Trinidad. We started our placement on Monday. Are consultant Mr Woo is not around much but his junior doctors are really nice and very laid back. They keep telling me and Rynn to stop being so keen and to go and Lime!! Our days start between 7.30 nd 8.0am but we our are always finished by lunch time. Theatres and Clinics close in the afternoon and all the doctors seem to dissappear, it's great!! We have spent time on te labour ward, which is quite quiet, felt lots of pregnant bellies in antenal clinic, clerked patients on the ward. Seen twins born via an elective C section, very cute!!! and spent a morning in gynae surgery. It is surprisingly similar to obs and gynae in the UK, but getting good experience.
We have discovered it is quite difficult to get around Trinidad if you do not have a car, as there is no relaible publc transport system and as Trinidad is not a touristy place, tourists are not really catered for. One of the Junior Doctors took me and Rynn out on Thursay afternoon so show us some of the sights, He took us to a National Park, a beautiful secluded beach where the locals go (Macaray beach)and showed us some good food places and shopping malls tp visit. We have also discovered TGI Fridays happy hour and Zen's, the best night club in the Carribbean which are both with in walking distnce of our guest house.
I haven't mentioned yet that yes it's rainy season and, I seem to be cursed!!! Every morning it's nice and sunny as we walk to clinics and then as soon as it;s time to leave it buckets down with rain and puts pay to our afternoon by the pool. It is still really humid but the tanning is not going to well as yet.
Today (Saturday) we hired a maxi cab for the day and went to Blue Basin Waterfalls (90m high) and Maracus Waterfalls(150m high, the highest in Trinidad), they were both amazing but yes you guessed it, it rained, but was actually more fun in the rain. The Maracus waterfalls invloved a 20minutes hike through the rain forest, which all being slightly hung over and in flip flops we were not prepared for. Soaked by the rain and slidding in the mud was hilaroius, by the end we were all climbing these steep, narrow paths in just our swim wear as we were saoked through any way and were trying to save our clothes. Two young Trinidad boys were our guides and they thought we were ridiculous. it was really fun though definately an experience i will not forget. Standing under these mighty waterfalls was spectacular, and gave you such a buzz!! Glad to be back in a dry maxi by the end however!!! We are off to maracus beach tomorrow, the best beach in Trinidad, it weather permits that is, actually we will probably go rain or shine. the weather is soo unpredictable.
