Whilst talking to people on our travels we were warned that there was not much left in Christchurch after the earthquake in February. However we had to go because it was where we were flying to Australia from. After driving the inland scenic route from Geraldine, which was pretty but not in comparison to some of the landscapes we have seen in New Zealand we arrived in Christchurch. On the outskirts we came across a Westfields Shopping Centre so stopped there for some lunch and a shop. J bought some shoes as his have been worn out. Rachel really wanted to get some shoes, but they were completely impractical for travelling! We then decided to head in the direction of the city center in the hope we would find signs to an I-Site, which we had done in every other town in New Zealand. As soon as we started to approach the center we started to see evidence of the earthquake, with rubble and condemned buildings. The whole of the center has been cordoned off, we couldn't see a lot but the streets were empty, quite a contrast from driving through the busy streets of the suburbs. A shop assistant working in the mall said that government plan is that the city will be back to normal in 2030 which shows just how much damage there was. But also shows that they are rebuilding it properly to avoid so much damage when there is another earthquake. They are aiming to make it one of the best cities in the world, so we will have to come back when it is sorted. There was no I-Site but a local pointed us in the direction of a library which had information on campsites. We found one eventually after driving round for some time, mainly because of Rachel's map skills. The campsite was in a good location on Papanui Street, with another large mall opposite and lots of restaurants. The sun was shining for our last day in New Zealand. In the morning we had a quick look around the mall opposite the campsite before having lunch. In the afternoon we enjoyed the sun and cleaned the campervan out before we hand it back tomorrow. And then Australia!!
