Jono's Travels
It's a free day today, this means I could sleep in if I wanted too, or make my way around the city to see things. I decided to go see things, I mean why wouldn't you, having only 1 day to see the city. I popped downstairs at about 7:30 and had a quick breakfast, but tried to ensure Ai had a largish breakfast as I suspected there would be a lot of walking involved today. Tall Ryan headed off a little just before 8am to start his walking my tour as he had a lot he wanted to see today. Meg, Lieu, Damien and I decided to headed off a little later and made our way to the Parliament Building, as there were a few places we visited today I might just mention them and then do a quick summary on them. • Parliament Building - big building great architecture • Shoes on the Danube - this is a little monument to remember those Jews that were lines up by the river and told to remove their shows (as they were the most expensive thing they would own) and then shot. • Buda Castle - Big castle at the top of the hill, didn't go inside it though, but had very nice gardens and great views • Liberty Statue - a huge walk up hill to the top to get a good close up of this statue and a few others, more great views over the city • Citadella - a church on top of the same hill, ended up getting classified as a fort when Hitler invaded and took it over. • Church in the rock - didn't actually get to go inside as we couldn't find the entrance for it, it essentially it was a church built into a cliff face • Central Market Hall - walked the wrong way to this market, we ended up having to head all the way back to where we had just come from to get to the market, we Ran into Tall Ryan there and then we had lunch. • St Stephen's Basilica - after lunch we headed to here but made a quick toilet stop past our Hostel and offloaded stuff we didn't need from our bags. The Basilica was pretty nice inside, lots of pictures on the walls and ceilings, and the stain glass windows in the chapel were pretty nice too. We climbed to the top of the dome and took a lot of photos from up there, it was a pretty hard climb too. • House of Terror - the house of terror museum was dedicated to those Jews that lost their lives and those that were held in the cells of the building, a huge number and their faces are what you see as you walk past it as well as when you enter, no photos were allowed, but the exhibit is well later out, and you can even go into the cells and in solitary confinement rooms, pretty tough for them, the part that stuck with me the most is seeing a video of it after it was all over and some of the female survivors confronting one of the female guards who looked like she had no remorse until the very end. • Heroes' Square - it was a recommended site to see, unfortunately some production (or perhaps reenactment) is being carried out there tomorrow and the following day, so today it was all closed off for a dress rehearsal and you couldn't really see a thing. After our site seeing moments, we made our way back to Wombats, this time catching the train (we had already walked about 20km today), we had a quick refresher and then headed out to dinner, at this stage Tim was still sleeping, and he had slept most of the day. Earlier in the day, the girls said they felt like Thai for dinner, we happened to spot on just as we got out of the train station earlier, so we decided it was there for dinner. The Thai restaurant actually had good Wifi and the meal was wonderful, all empty plates on our end so it was an indication from us that it tasted real good, and I think that we all had worked up the appetite for it. It was then back across the river to get some photos of the Parliament building lit up at night, it was really pretty seeing it lit up, only problem we had were the annoying bugs that kept flying around. Back to the hostel and then I tried to get my clothes dried again, this time it took only about 20 minutes and they were finally dry, thank goodness as I was worried I would be wearing damp shorts tomorrow.
