Jono's Travels
We head to the concentration camps at Auschwitz this morning before continuing on to Prague in the Czech Republic, it's likely to be a sad day, but it's important to remember these kinds of things to ensure they aren't repeated. Early morning leaving but this meant we were the first tour group to go though the gates. I liked this as we didn't get stuck behind the bigger and slower groups. Just standing outside before going through everything just seemed so airy, knowing where we were and what we were about to see. We made our way through the gates before meeting our two tour guides. We split into groups and made our way around the first camp of Auschwitz, this was apparently the nicer of them all, despite the fact that none of them were actually nice at all, just better living conditions in this camp. I won't go into much detail about this place as its more of an individual thing as to how we felt, but there were two places that probably got to most of us, a room full of about 2,000kgs of human hair which was shaved from the victims of the gas chamber and sent away to be turned into fabric. The other thing that got me was the remain gas chamber which we walked into, it was the last remaining gas chamber as all the rest were destroyed just before the war finished to try and hide what they had been doing. I could see clearly some finger scratch marks in the walls. We left there and made our way through the rest of the camp before heading to the second and largest of the three camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau. We took a look around and was shown a train cart which was donated by the son of one of the survivors as a kind of way for him to remember his father, and a way for others to remember all the others that were taken here by the trains. We then proceeded down to one of the remains of two of the gas chambers. You could still clearly see the rooms for different things, but unless you knew what room was for what you wouldn't know it was a gas chamber. After the gas chamber we made our way to a building to show us what it looked like inside, no foundations, no floor boards, just purely bunks inside the buildings, each bunk about 1.5 meters wide and had at least 5 people sleeping on each level with no mattress. From there it was time to move on to our next destination... Prague. We arrived in Prague, dropped our bags at the hotel and change before heading into town to have a walking tour around the city, the change of clothes was needed as we planned to head out after the walking tour. The walking tour took us around the city in the evening and once again, we were shown a number of places to visit. The Tour was made a bit more impressive but the building being lit up by lights at night. We saw the big clock on the old town hall tower, but as it would be another half hour before it would be triggered off again we headed off to see some more things. As it was so late at night all the places were closed, but we do now have a lot of ideas on what to see. Now was the time to make our separate ways, those that wanted to stay out could, and the others could head off and either do their own thing, or head back to the hotel. We headed off to a bar with 5 levels, with each floor having different music and themes happening, such as the ground floor having an ice bar on it while another floor had hip hop and another floor had oldies music. We did some drinking, dancing, and some of us decided to head down to the ice bar, despite that fact I live in NZ and we have plenty of Ice Bars around, I'd still never been to one, so I decided I needed to go in. To be honest I didn't really find it too cold, instead I found it kind of refreshing. The coldest part of it was actually holding my drink, good thing they provided us with gloves. Stayed around some of the group for a while before heading back to the hotel with the Fantastic five. We ended up leaving at about 2:00am and not getting back to the hotel until about 3am due to the fact we had missed the most recent train, so had to wait for the next one, about 20 mInutes away.
