Jono's Travels
Today is brought to you by Mother Nature. Made up of 16 lakes connected by streams and waterfalls and surrounded by 300 square kilometres of national park, Plitvice Lakes didn't make it onto the UNESCO World Heritage list without reason. Confession, I stole today's intro from our Topdeck intro for the day. But it's true, today mainly evolves around the Plitvice Lakes, and had to be in one of my favourite destinations so far. Seeing today is mainly visiting the lakes there won't be much to say apart from it being so beautiful and that whatever photos I've take today won't do it justice. Believe me when I also say that the photos I'm posting today are only a small fraction of what I took and that the descriptions won't be too creative for them. The Plitvice Lakes are mostly made of chalk, created after years of sedimentation, and has a blue-green colour due to the limestone of the surrounding rocks, they also contain the tallest waterfall in all of Croatia, so we definitely had a big day in store for us if we wanted to see as much as we could. We got up and had breakfast before making our way to the bus so we could make a packed lunch for the day ahead. We then headed off to the lakes a full day of walking. Upon arriving at the lakes we were given our tickets and told which tracks to take, while the longest track is suppose to take 7-8 hours, that's based on older people so Meg, Tim, Tall Ryan, Damien, Lieu and I all decided to do the big track, however we would be changing it up a bit and taking a boat for part of it and add some stuff on to it. We began our walk and wishing about 5 minutes met our first view of the lakes and some falls, seeing it was just our first view we thought it was beautiful, but it had nothing on what we would be seeing over the day. We jumped on to a small ferry which took us to another spot to catch another ferry to another part of the lakes. Unfortunately we had to wait around for a it 20 minutes, but this gave us plenty of time to explore and get more photos of the lakes and falls that were at this spot. After catching the second ferry to their far end of the lake we headed off to go check out some of the waterfalls along a 6km loop of the lakes, eventually coming across one of the waterfalls, and standing around taking a heap of photos thinking it was the tallest one. Tim had disappeared for a few minutes and then comes back around and says "Hey guys, the big one is around the corner", whoops... But hey, we got some good shots of that waterfall at least. We continued around the bend and got some more photos of this waterfall before trekking to the top of the mountain to have some lunch and check out the view from the top. We continued around the track and made it back to where the boat dropped us off, after a quick bathroom break we carried on around the lake only to be met with a track that disappeared into the lake which obviously had flooded. I stepped around the corner carefully placing my feet on stones which appeared to have been placed down by someone, and found that 10 meters around the corner the path continued on. Tall Ryan had made the mistake of wearing brand new shoes, completely white that didn't have a spec of dirt on them, good luck to him to try and keep those clean and dry today. The rest of the track got pretty muddy and other parts of the track were rather flooded too, but we didn't care so much about that as it was met with awesome views of the lakes and waterfalls at almost every bend. After finishing off the big track. We tacked on another smaller track before catching a bus back to the first stop as we were running short on time and needed to make sure we didn't miss our bus back to the campsite. After getting back to the campsite I headed off to was my shoes and have a shower before heading back to my cabin to catch a few Z's before dinner. I ended up sleeping through dinner. Oh well, I wasn't overly hungry anyway which I guess is a good thing. I ended up getting woken by Kyle, Ryan and Conner with Conner jumping on my bed, Ryan throwing confetti everywhere in my room while I was sleeping, while they all screamed like loons the entire time. They got me good, that will teach me for going to sleep and leaving my room unlocked. I spent the next 10 minutes cleaning my room up of all the confetti that was left all around the room before trying to get some Wifi and then heading back to bed.
