Jono's Travels
Had a little sleep in this morning, getting up at about 8:30, feeling rather good... Even my legs felt fine after the run home last night. I got up and headed over to breakfast, of which I wasn't too impressed with, there wasn't really anything wrong with it, but it was pretty well much the same as every other places we had stayed so we can get a little bored with the same thing.m, as we have a half day of Kayaking I decided I had better have at least something to old me over until lunch. After getting breakfast some of us met up and headed into town to go to do the Sea Kayaking. The sea was pretty choppy and really not what we were expecting it to be like, so some decided not to go, and after the big night out, others weren't in the best shape either, but we still had enough for 4 double kayaks and tall Ryan just made it in time and decided to go into a single Kayak on his own. We headed out past the breaking waves and then headed down the coastline looking at the walls of the old city and other parts of Dubrovnik, due to the bad weather instead of making our way to the Island like normal, we headed into a cave as a rest stop so we could have some lunch. Getting into the cave was going to be a little fun due to the breaking wave smashing against some of the rocks, but as long as we aimed for the right spot we should be good, plus one of the guides swam out to grab the kayaks to help guide us better. Fabian and Tim headed in first showing everyone how NOT to get out of the kayak, completely falling out and getting completely drenched by the waves of water, TIm almost loosing his phone and paddle, surprisingly keeping his hat and glasses on, yet Fabian lost his sunnies with no chance of finding them. After seeing that, the rest of us were fine getting ashore. Lunch inside the cave was pretty basic, but very filling, bread rolls, enough for us all and I really needed the second one I went back for after not having that much for breakfast. The cave was pretty nice as well, a little bit of a stoney beach but still a nice place to relax, a hole in the top which allowed light to come in giving us plenty of visibility, and a mysterious door which Sabrina told Tim leads to Narnia. We finished up with lunch and then we had two choice for heading back, head to the island coast or just go straight back to shore. There was only 20 minutes difference in time, but I couldn't be bothered to head to the island if we weren't going ashore so decided to head back to where we started from. In order to get back though we obviously first had to get out of the cave, with the breaking waves we had to jump into the kayaks and be held in place waiting for the right wave to help us out, once we felt we being pushed out we just had to paddle and keep paddling until we were out. The waves just smashing over the top of the kayak and totally drenching me. We headed back but strangely enough we found ourselves having to paddle mainly on one side, I can only assume that the tide was coming out and was causing our Kayak to turn out to sea. We headed into the bay and ended up having to wait a while to get in as the guide had to wait until his colleagues in the office were there, not sure why but possibly related to the rocky waves today. Tall Ryan wasn't feeling too good by this stage, not sure why, not as if he had to Kayak by himself that much as he was getting towed most of the way by a boat. Perhaps it was the rocking of the waves just mixing with his hard night out the day before. We eventually got to head back to shore, seeing Tall Ryan had already stated he felt like he was going to barf, we let him go in front of us, we noticed him pointing at something in the water, after he got to shore me made our to shore only to find what he was pointing at, a dead cat floating in the water... Poor thing. Upon getting to shore I wanted to get a few things done with a little limited time, so I quickly got changed and made my way to the entrance of the City Wall walk, which was a 2km walk around the walls of the old city. As the started the climb on the stairs I soon realised that if my legs weren't sore by the end of the day, they sure would be by the morning as there were just so many stairs. I power walked my way round the wall, normally probably an hour to and hour and half for decent look, but I managed about 45 to 50 minutes even stopping to take phones and admire the view. The view from the top of the walls was absolutely beautiful, the terracotta roofs of the buildings was a site to be seen, and while I took photos, they don't show the full beauty. I then headed down and made my way to a fortress over by where we started our Kayaking. The stairs to this one really began to tire me out, not only had I been going rather quickly around the city walls, there were stills huge amount of stairs to climb, and these ones just added to it. The upside of it was the view from the entrance way which made the climb worth while. Because I had already paid for the wall I was able to get around without having to pay for entrance to the fort, a good thing too as there really wasn't much in there apart from lighting equipment, which I can only assume is used for game of thrones or something else like a concert. I headed back down and then made my way toward the cable car which overlooked the city, I had about an hour and a half left before I had to be at the city again so figured I would have time to get to the top and back down... Upon arriving at the cable car station I realised it wasn't good to happen, the line was a good 200-300 meters long of people from cruise ships, and the cable at took about 5 minutes each way, I waited around for about 15-2" minutes and with the line barely moving I decided it wasn't going to happen so headed back to the old city to take a look around. On the way back I found a self service laundry mat which had we known, would have probably been way cheaper to get our clothes washed at. I took a look around and then headed out to our meeting spot where we would begin our "Game of Thrones" walking tour. We met our guide for this and he took us around and showed us some of the sights where they filmed parts of Game of Thrones. When he started doing the tours just 4 years ago it was just him, however Dubrovnik has now become so busy because of it he now has an additional 8 staff working for him. One he guided us to the sights he would show is a picture from the show and it was then obvious where it had been filmed. Our guide also showed us some of he places where the new Star Wars movie was filmed, but obviously we haven't actually seen it yet, but I'll know what to look out for. Due to the new Star Wars movie coming out, they expect that Dubrovnik will probably get another two million people visiting a year, so I'm guessing he is already getting ready for doing those guided tours as well. We finished our tour off in a Game of Thrones gift shop and got to sit in a replica 'Iron Throne' and get some photos. Once we had posed for enough photos we headed off to get a feed, I got a lovely meat lasagne, thinking it would just be a small piece, but I was supposed with a good size portion that was just enough to fill me up. We all finished off and some headed back to the hotel, while the rest of us headed off again to either go shopping or go the a bar that sits on top of the rocks on the outside of the city. I chose to go to the bar, more just because I wanted to see the view. By this stage my legs were starting to feel the amount of stairs I had climbed already today, but it was still well worth the walk. The view was lovely, but while they had a drinks menu on it that showed Ciders and other drinks, they were pretty well much down to just beer or soft drink. We hung around for a drink and took some photos before making our way back to the hotel. One last set of stairs back at the hotel up to my floor and I was done and ready to go to bed, it's was a full on day but certainly one worth doing.
