Tales From The Far Side
Hello to you all.
I am in the little resort town of Hervey Bay in the South of Queensland. Its midday and I'm knackered, having just got up from a party the night before to celebrate returning to the mainland from a three day trip to Fraser Island (see picture).
This island is over 100km long and is the worlds largest san island. I visited it with a group of travellers from the hostel i am in. We were put together by a tour company and given a 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser to drive arouynd the island. Early on Tuesday moring we woke before sunrise to load the truck with tents, food and other supplies and set off for a great adventure. With me were three French guys, a German, an Australian, an Irishman, a Canadian and an American.
We had complete freedom of travel withy the 4x4 and camped by the beach for two nights. The beach is used as the main highway but travel has to be timed to the low tides so we got up early to explore each day and set up camp in the early afternoon before preparing dinner as the sun went down around 6pm (its getting into winter here).
Despite being the only group not to see Tiger Sharks off the beach (no swimming) we did sight some Dingos.
Now i'm back on dry land i'm taking a b reather today before catching a night bus up the coast to a place called Airlie beach where i will be boarding a sailing ship for a three dayh cruise around the Whitsunday islands.
Let you know how it goes, hope you are all well and happy and starting to enjoy and the summer,
Jonny.
