Tales From The Far Side
Hey everyone.
I've been having an excellent time in Melbourne since arriving last Sunday evening. Prior to leaving New Zealand I spent a few days travelling all around the South island using Christchurch as a base. I drove to beautiful mount cook and back and did a spot of whale watching. All was good fun. Christchurch was a quiet very Englishy town but livened up on the weekend. The great thing about nightlife in New Zealand and Australia is there are no silly licencing restrictions so places stay open until the early hours and there is a lot more variety to attract people into the bars and clubs.
So back to Melbourne.
Arrived late on Sunday and spent 45 minutes on the tarmack waiting to get off rthe plane due to staff problems. Eventually let off and got a free shuttle into town where i stayed at a quiet little place in an area called Fitzroy.
I moved out after a couple of days to somewhere a bit more happening in the city centre and have been having a few late nights recently. I will have to pace it a bit because as i sadi before there is always somewhere open until 6 or 7am from Thursday to Saturday.
Melbourne is a really great city with lots of leafy parks, a beautiful waterfront area and a good cultural centre called federation Square. There was live jazz playing at this place all week and there are loads of interesting aleys and parades filed with cafes and novelty shops.
I didn't get to do a neighbours tour (actually i made it a commitment to not go near one but if any of you lovers of that show come here you'll be happy to know that you can pay $30 to meet and drink with your favourite stars.
Spent an interesting day yesterday watching Aussie Rules at the MCG (melbourne cricket ground). Its quite a high tempo sport like a cross between rugby and football and theer wasa good atmposphere at the ground.
I catch a bus in about an hour to Sydney so its going to be first overnighter. luckily i am knackered from a long weekend of partying so i should sleep like a log.
Take care of yourselves,
jonny.
