The bus to Sihanoukville was nice and short, only 2 hours! So we made it there, checked in to a funky, laid back hostel where our room was a little bungalow surrounded by huge banana plants, and headed out to the beach just as it started to crack the flags! Serendipity beach was quite nice (even though it's fair to say that, the dirt track and piles of rubbish everywhere make the walk there a bit less picturesque), but by the time we were decked out on a (padded) sunbed with a 50c beer in hand we were in our element! Jonny even proclaimed to be eleven out of ten again - just before making up a new phrase - "my jokes are sometimes near to the knuckle" (I think he meant close to the bone).
So that was pretty much us for the rest of the day, was so good to be able to have beach time again! The beach was pretty manic though, with a steady stream of beggars, masseuses, wrist-band and fruit sellers constantly trying to get you to spend your dollars. In the small respite from the locals are the westerners coming to ply you with flyers for the bars - sunglasses and ipod were definitely the way forward!
That evening we indulged in a steak in a posh-ish western restaurant then headed to the beach again to check out the nightlife. It wasn't as 'pumping' as we had expected but still miles more lively that Kampot or Battambang!
Saturday started with the biggest and loudest thunderclap we had ever heard (even bigger than Fraser Island) so until the rain cleared up we spent the morning pottering around the hostel. It was a good job we weren't in a rush to get anywhere as Jonny beat the record for the longest wait for a banana crepe ever.... Such food-related frustrations seem to have been quite common in Cambodia!
Later we headed to Otres beach to check out some accommodation that had been recommended to us. The beach was nice enough, as were the digs but it was pretty quiet and given we had been keen to get to somewhere a bit more lively we decided just to stay put! But we had a nice day there cloud-bathing although I was NOT impressed when I found a big dirty fly in my noodles at lunchtime!
Back in Serendipity that night there was much nail-biting tension (followed by the loudest, most embarassing celebration/scary face pulling from Jonny to date) as we watched the United game. We then went for a few drinks to calm our nerves and a filthy pizza, which some girl tried to make us feed to a dog (errr clearly you know nothing about us love). Then, in our quest for nightlife we ended up in this bar which was filled with creepy old men trying to pick up young Cambodian girls. The highlight was this guy throwing some very dangerous shapes all over the bar and the dance floor. Was very entertaining to watch! Once he had left, there was only so much sleazing and gyrating we could tolerate before we cut our losses and headed home!
Sunday was gorgeous weather again so we hit the beach. We got lucky and managed to bag ourselves some free tickets to the 'ocean waterpark' and had some good clean fun playing on the big inflatable slide, trampoline and climbing wall! Having little to no upper body strength some of it was quite difficult and so I got shown up by the Cambodian children!
In the evening we went to a teppanyaki restaurant where I had a lovely fat crocodile steak then we went to a 'cinema' (basically a guest-house with each room being converted into a mini cinema so we could have our own private screening!) we watched 127 hours which was gripping but very stressful!
We decided to hang around one more day before going to Koh Chang so after another nice day on the beach, we finished off our stay in Cambodia with some traditional food (I had an Amok actually served in a coconut) and then went back for some more cinema action, this time to see Black Swan, which neither of us really understood!
