It doesn't get much better than this - sharing a big cold beer Chang on our guesthouse terrace looking out to the seemingly infinite horizon as we are treated to our final stunning sunset on Koh Chang! It has been a perfect few days here and exactly what we had hoped for, and we got real lucky with the weather too!
It was all a far cry from how we felt arriving on Tuesday night though - when after 12 hours of being herded around in what felt like forever on our bus-minibus-different minibus-tuktuk-boat-tuktuk combo journey crossing our final border, that left us feeling pretty jaded even before we checked in to our crappy bungalow for the night - we felt like we just wanted the 5th to come around quickly. But by the time we had checked in to a nice big room with AC right by the sea and were melting on the beach, those feelings had soon gone and we started a 4 day basking session!
We spent Wednesday on the beach with Antoine, a really friendly French guy who we had met on the boat over, and stayed there until the sun set behind one of the tiny islands out to sea, and then the 3 of us went for dinner and a few drinks at the Magic Garden. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a flyer on the wall for extras required for a film being shot on Friday! It was our good friend Danny who was again recruiting just like two months ago in Khao Lak and I somehow managed not to blurt it out to Hutch for a few hours until we got back to the room!
Thursday was another perfect day on Lonely Beach, with the shallow sea clear as glass and feeling like a bath, and the biggest stress we had was trying to keep cool! We watched sunset back at the guesthouse and chilled out there with a beer, feeling pretty damn good about life and now wishing Bangkok would never come round! After much deliberation, we had decided to turn our hand to acting one more time - thinking it was fate that the only reason we were on Koh Chang in the first place was because of a guy who we had met on the set of the first movie!
So we had a half day on the beach and then got picked up by the production team and taken to the posh resort when filming was taking place elsewhere on the island. It was uncanny how similar everything was to last time, and it was funny seeing Danny again, and there was a good group of us who chatted to pass the hours of waiting whilst it chucked it down - which made us even more pleased that we had done it since we weren't missing out on any beach time!
The movie was a fairly low budget German affair but everyone was really really friendly and it was actualy way more enjoyable than The Impossible. We were filming a party scene on a floating disco boat and after some initial moving around and handing out fake drinks we started out on 7 HOURS of dancing to Wigfields 'Saturday Night' and The Vengaboys 'Boom' over and over again - we really could have done with some booze to loosen up the dance moves!!
The German director was nice and kept encouraging us to throw some shapes despite being stone cold sober, though at one point he did say "that was great - do the same again but just dance better!". Given the soundtrack I thought we were doing a good job, though to be fair there were some people who were properly giving it stacks and made us laugh all night long!
Once again, the two of us seemed to do quite well at having a part that actually involved a little more than just blending into the background, and Hutch in particular will definately make the final cut as she had to dance for 2 minutes straight (which felt like 2 hours) non stop right behind the main actress! We stopped shooting at 3am where the final scene basically involved everyone just freestyling jumping up and down - and I swear to god the floating disco nearly sank because it was seriously bouncing, and the basic repairs that had been made thoughout the night to the floorboards didn't seem to be holding up that well!!
By the time we finally got home at 4am we were shattered, but we were really motivated and still got up early(ish) and headed to the beach for our last day of sunbathing - and were rewarded with the best one yet as there was even a nice breeze for once to cool us down! It was just another perfect day, and we were so happy we even discussed pushing the flight back yet again and just staying on the island even longer! By the time the day was over we were looking back on how lucky we had been with the weather and how everything had turned out brilliant, and we were all set for, kinda unbelievably, our final bus journey - for this trip at least!
