We left another scorchio day behind in Battambang on Sunday morning
and got the bus back to Phnom Penh, where we had our last supper and a
few drinks before waving Em off on Monday afternoon, in the middle of
what felt like the hottest day yet! With just the two of us left, we
headed to the central market to buy a sweet new camera and take our
minds off things -it's so hard saying bye to people!!
Back at the hostel I decided to get a hair cut to try and look a bit
more presentable for the last couple of weeks, but it didn't exactly
go according to plan and I came out with a style from the '80s which
Rhianna would probably go for - not impressed!! Then in the evening we
had a real relaxing time and watched some DVDs in our room to finish
our little transit day through PP.
On Tuesday we got a bus down to Kampot where we hired a bicycle for a
couple of hours in the afternoon and rode around town for a bit. We
got caught short by a torrential downpour but made it back to the
guesthouse, where I persuaded Hutch to have a go at resurrecting my
hair from the woeful attempt made by my Cambodian barber friend, and
although it took a sweaty and tense hour I think we may have found her
calling!! In the evening it was pretty dead to say the least and so we
weren't left with much choice but to have an early night!
Our mood of kinda feeling like we can't be bothered to do much
continued on Wednesday as we had a lazy morning and then figured out
that we had shot ourselves in the foot a bit and weren't able to do
what we wanted the rest of the day, so we spent time doing some long
overdue admin to put the day to good use!
After spending so long in the Internet cafe the guy even gave us free
Cokes, we then chilled out along the riverside with a couple of beers
and Hutch even got a mug of PG Tips which totally made her day -
simple things!!
Kampot isn't exactly a happening place and so after the best pork ribs
ever for tea we walked back home using lightning to guide us past the
many dogs which seem to constantly be in the street barking.
On Thursday we did a day trip into the Bokor National Park, which is
huge. It took us over two hours of (pretty pointless and sweaty)
trekking and sitting in the back of a pick up truck just to get to the
top of Bokor Hill, where there are the remains of an old resort,
church and water tower that the French randomly built in 1920's and
then the Khemer Rouge used as a prison in the '70's. With the mist
swirling around it did have an eerie ghost town feel to it, though it
was a big effort to get there and we still don't really understand why
there is now a massive development in the park to build huge 5 star
resorts!
After a welcome hours break to kick back and rest the feet after the
first bit of strenuous activity in a while, we then went on a 2 hour
sunset boat cruise down the river (we trustingly all jumped aboard a
small ramshackle boat which just happened to turn up at the right time
and place without any word from the dodgy looking guy or a ticket!),
which was really nice and gave some great views of the rolling hills
of the NP.
Although Kampot had been nothing special, we ended our visit by
treating ourselves to more amazing ribs and a bottle of red in the
evening for one of the best meals of the whole trip, determined to
really enjoy the last 2 weeks and chill out hopefully under some sun!
