Well Hello and Welcome to our final blog post from Vietnam coming from Phu Quoc Island. We stayed on the island for 2 nights but would have loved to stay more but have time against us now and still alot to see before we meet Ann and Brad in Bangkok. The island is claimed by Cambodia to be theirs due to it only being 15kms from Cambodian mainland appose to the 45kms from Vietnam. The island however was given to Vietnam by the French after they left in the 70's so nae luck Cambodia lol.
We arrived on the island via our ferry from Ha Tien to find it absolutely pishing it down. Vietnam's wet season is from July to Sept so we did worry that it had come early. The whole day it very rarely stopped for the odd 1/2 hour so it was a very uneventful first day. From the ferry we got two Moto taxi's to find us a hotel. We stayed on an area of the island called Long Beach where we stayed in little Garden Bungalows 100m from the beach. We had a covered deck area in front of our bungalow so majority of the day was spent in our hammocks watching films on the netbook. Went out for tea and then hit the sack early praying for nice weather the following day.
Well the big guy upstairs listened and answered our prayers by giving us the best/hottest weather we have had in our time in Vietnam. We were up relatively early so decided to just hit the beach and top up our tan's. Chilled on the beach front for a good 4hours then decided to go head for some lunch on our rented moped. Decided to do a mini tour of the island but to be honest there wasn't much to see. Stopped at a Pearl Farm which was quite good but apart from that it was just the gorgeous tropical coastline that is worth mentioning. After we had a small bite to eat we headed back to chill at the beach where we stayed until sunset which was really nice and appropriate way to end our first visit (hopefully of many) to Vietnam.
Have both again thoroughly enjoyed our time here in Vietnam. Were both surprised to see how much of the locals actually wear those pointy, straw, cone shaped hats (Thought it was just a Commercial Tourist kind of thing). The rural and coastal scenery in majority of places we have visited have been absolutely breath-taking (considering how devastated the entire length of the country had been hit by both the American and North/South civil war is really quite amazing) and worth seeing before Vietnam turns into Thailand in terms of huge Hotel Chains/Tourism boost. We have felt safe the entire time we have been here and again the people couldn't have been nicer, trying to help us wherever they could. From absolutely hectic Ho Chi Minh City to very peaceful Ninh Binh, have had an amazing, unforgettable time and would recommend Vietnam for anyone to come travel/see.
We leave early tomorrow morning for our ferry back to Ha Tien on the mainland and then onwards to our first stop in Cambodia, Kampot.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Night VietnAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAm.
