We,ve hit the road from the boat towards Burnie where we were going to have breakfast. No cars on the Highway at all. It felt like all of Tassie was still in bed. Still it was nice to have the island to myself. (And Ria) We ended up at Mcdonalds for breakfast as it was the only thing open in the whole place. That went well. Crap coffee. I was anxious to put some K's under the belt so we turned down towards Strahan. The road started off like any country style road and the weather was perfect. There was a slight drizzle when we got off the boat but no sign of that now.
It wasn't long before Tassie's reputation kicked in and the legacy of a drunken road builder came our way. TWISTIES and lots of them. With good bitumen' new tyres and dry road' It was like a dream come true. They kept coming and coming. Relentless. I could hardly see due to the tears welling in my helmet. After 14'000 ks of predominantly straight roads around the main land I finally had found the mecca of the bike world. Every corner I expected it to end. It didn't. It was the gift that kept giving. Plenty of roadkill though. Little wallabies everywhere meant I would zig zag throiugh them. Never encountered any live ones though. Lucky.
We kept this up for a couple of hundred k's and headed into Zeehan. Turns out the guy and his wife on the boat must have gotten confused as to what is a living paradise. Zeehan was basic. Did have saome nice scenery around it but very little else to offer. It was only 44 ks to Strahan so we were back on the gas and landed into Strahan at around 11.00 am.
We stayed at the Strahan Holiday Retreat and it was really nice. Well priced and a block off the beach. The place was very quiet because it was Sunday. And on Sunday everyone disappears. But we took advantage of this and did a walk to the local Hogarth Falls and then up to the lookout. Some nice lunch on the beach front and that was pretty much it. Still stuffed from the previous night we bought some groceries for dinner and breakfast andwent back to the room.
It was an early night as we were told the road is horrific from Strahan to Hobart and would take us 8 hours. This was by some guy on the boat who said it made the great ocean road look like a straight line.
So off to bed early for an early start.
