Hobart to Port Arthur is a short journey. It was a lazy take off from the Hotel and still the weather was holding up nicely. Again driving out of the big city proved no issue. Straight down the road and left. Over the big bridge and that was it. 110 k's an hour all the way.
It didn't take long for Tassie to put the goods on as far as scenery. It is totally green and picture perfect everywhere we seem to go. I won't dis Tassie ever again. Just the people who live there.
Once you get past Sorell it suddenly gets that Morninton Peninsula feel as you hug the coast road and cross a few bridges to get to Port Arthur. Stopped for a few pics along the way and ended taking the scenic route which added a further 28 k's to the ride. No matter though as we had a full day there.
We were staying at the Port Arthur Motor Inn which backs onto the historic site. There is a gate between the hotel and the site but your room keys gives you access through it. Saves a few k's by not having to drive around the road way. We decided to get some lunch and found a little restaurant hidden down along the coast line. It was a superb location and we decided to come back there later.
The waitress recommended that we head down to the remarkable cave at the end of our street. We did exactly that and found some coastline not too different to that along the Great Ocean Road. A short walk took us down to the cave which was not as remarkable as the signs indicate. Still nice though. A few pics later and then we went back into town.
We ran into a girl who was riding her pushy around Aus. Originally from Manchester Uk she was quite talkative and bubbly. She was prtetty much couch surfing Aus and was heading up to Sydney to work for a while. Unlike most of the pushbike riders I hvae seen circulating the country she looked as though she was just going down to the shops. Anyway she had the credibility from what she had done so far and we wished her well.
We ended up going through the Old Historic site via our access gate and ran into Trev and Jen again. They were just spending the day there and going back to Hobart. We were booked into a dinner at the Felon's restaurant and then doing the ghost tour at 9.00 pm. I could tell Ria was getting anxious about this as she is very superstitious being Indonesian. Being the p****I am I played on this and milked it for all it was worth.
At 6.45 pm we walked to the restaurant in the precinct where we had a beautiful two course dinner. A couple of reds and I was ready to be spooked. It was dark by 9.00pm and the atmosphere was there for the ghost tour. Dave our guide enjoyed telling the stories as we went through the buildings and cellars which was creeping Ria out.
The unfortunate thing for her was that at the end of the tour we had to walk back through the precinct in the dark to get back to our room on our own. She wanted me to walk back on my own and get the bike and come back to the visitor centre and pick her up. Wasn't happening. So at the end of the tour we were suddenly alone near the old prison with a 500 metre walk back to the gate. Passing every spooky building we had just seen.
She was terrified and as I kept stopping to take photos she started yelling at me and swearing. I must admit I played on it a bit which was totally out of character for me. All the way back I kept stalling and she kept getting madder at me. Strangely enough though a small light appeared behind us out of nowhere which disappeared without trace.
Back in our room I was laughing at her and she was calling me for everything. The room was quite warm so we went to sleep with the covers down. Not Ria though. She was still spooked and was cooking under the doona being too scared to sleep on top of the bed. She ended up hiding her head under the sheet with the rest of her body out from under the doona. She kept waking me through the night. I feel from being scared.
She was dog tired the following morning.
The next day had us going to Launceston which was our last stop before returning home.
