Last big day to ride before we finish at Launceston for our last night. Having loved every minute we decided to ride up the east coast road the long way for a 400 klm day.
We jumped on the bike in Port Arthur at around 8.15am and headed off. the only issue was that we had very little fuel left. I last fuelled the bike in Strahan and had 60 klms left in the tank. Now we found out there was no fuel in in Port Arthur.
We rode cautiously out of town and back towards Sorrell. We didn't have enough to get that far so it was critical to get it asap. I had never pushed the beemer this far before so it was stressful looking at the glaring fuel light and the backwards counting kilometers of the distance to empty.
Finally we found a Caltex at Tunnanina which actually has a sign stating last fuel on the Arthur Hwy. Missed that on the way in. Thankfully topped it right up and put in 28 litres. What a relief.
Now it was time to have total disregard for fuel economy and open the b**** up again. We pointed the front wheel towards Bicheno which was 228 klms from Port Arthur. It ended up being our first stop and an early lunch.
The road to Bicheno was great. At one spot it was absolutely beautiful where we road along the mountains edge with a river down to our left. I had shown Ria how to use the hand held Gopro the previous evening with the intention of her getting some good video whilst I concentrated on the curves. This was the spot she could film. She pulled the camera out and for the next ten minutes filmed intently at what we thought was the beautiful scenery. Turns out she was holding the camera back to front and was pretty much filming herself.
I only noticed it as I looked alongside and saw the lense facing the wrong way. Well that was that anyway. Verbal instructions given via our communication headsets and hopefully she could rectify her photography inability.
Arrived in Bicheno pretty much on the death knock at 11.00 am. Pulled up at the local RSL and stopped the bike where we took a moment of respect with the locals for our diggers. I was wrapped we got there instead of being in the middle of nowhere for it.
We then found a nice Italian cafe where a brunch was had. Awesome as it was we wanted to keep going as the weather wasn't looking great for us. Wasn't wet but was very overcast with some stormy clouds in the area.
Now we headed for St Mary's which was our last glimpse of the coast until we get back to Devonport for the boat ride home.
The road went tight with the twisties again and I had the bike gopro running the whole way.
Eventually made it to Hobart and found our hotel in the centre of town. The Commodore Regent looked like a dated place and I thought I had let the team down as far as accomodation went.
However the room was great and new and had a view of Launceston. All turned out well. Ria was knackered and went straight to sleep whilst I had the chance to rip out a few missing blogs over the past few days. Tonight was just about some dinner and some relaxing. Not much else. Big day was had.
