We got to sleep in today .The tour leader is taking us to see the sights of the north eastern side of Thessaloniki. First we need to find a laundry that’s my small job. From there it is a short walk to our first major attraction, the Rotunda.
The famous Rotonda of Thessaloniki, Macedonia: The Rotonda (or Rotunda) is one of the most important Roman monuments in Thessaloniki. It stands just next to the Arch of Galerius in the city center and it is also known as the Church of Agios Georgios. This cylindrical structure was built in 306 AD by the Roman tetrarch Galerius, who intended it to be his grave. At first, it worked as a temple but it remains unknown to which god this temple was dedicated.
Eventually, Galerius died in 311 AD and he was buried in Felix Romuliana, modern Serbia. In the 4th century AD, the Byzantine emperor Constantine I converted it into an Orthodox church and many frescoes were painted inside, some of which survive today on the walls of Rotonda. In the 14th century, the Ottomans occupied Thessaloniki and in 1590, the Rotunda was converted into a mosque
The next stop was the White tower, it is a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki.
We then tour the old town ,and Shirley as usual had read about a small restaurant in a little back street called Lola. At last we had found a restaurant worthy of talking about . I have photos and it all cost a low 21 euros.
Well that a wrap.
See you again tomorrow ,we’re off to the high Mountain Monasteries.
Love Shirley and John
Ps Shirley’s lost bag came home all is good again.
