Day 2 at Kicheche.
We are heading to the Nation park to hopefully see part of the migration of the animals from one side of the Mara River to the other. We were ready to go at 8.00 am and Ben the driver was waiting at the jeep. It is to take 50minutes to reach the national park and the river where this crossing may take place, it is like watching paint dry ,it will dry but at its' own time ,the same with wild animals they will cross when they are ready.
The radio Statics, a voice then comes over ,in their native tongue the voice says "their crossing", every driver of every jeep made their way to this opening on the river where a mass of Zebra and wilder beast had gather near the waters edge about cross, it then that we found out that wilder beast are just like sheep ,if one turn away from the water the rest would turn and follow. This happen about four time, approach then turn away,,the suddenly out of the blue , they turned away ,run along the bank and crossed 100meters down ,from where we set up we could see them crossing , Ben moved as quick as he could but all we ended up seeing was the aftermath ,a crocodile with one wilder beast ,it must have been 3meters long. Shirley and I though the crossing we wanted to see so much at the Mara river was gone in the switch of an animals direction.
Just as we thought all was lost ,the radio crackled again ,the voice repeated the last message an we're off . 300 meters up river hundreds of Zebra and wilder beast had gather again the same as before ,to the river ,turn around, then 3 Zebra push their way though , as if to say " give us a go we can make decisions ", and they did . They plunge straight in and started swimming for their lives , we all watch ,holding our breath hoping they could make it to the other side without being taken by a crocodile, they all did , and within seconds a mad rush took place ,now we had animals pushing others out of the way to be the next to swim, it is truly one of the crazious sight I have seen. I asked our driver why there were no crocodile his answer was simple ,the crossing had been taking place since August and they were full ,as croc don't need to eat every day
The crossing over we went to have a better look at the National park, there were a lot of the same animals as before ,hippo zebra giraffes ,gazelles.
Again we let Ben know if there any large cats we would like to see them so as we drove he showed a herd of cape buffalo, a group Of baboons, all this time Shirley and I were wishing for Big Cats ,and we also now needed to check the tyre pressure, for the uneducated in Africa that means you need a pee, Ben stopped the jeep and told me pee at the back of the jeep , I never thought I was ever going to finish as I had been holding on for a while I can tell you .When I had finished he told Shirley her pee area was at the front of the jeep, you can amagine the look on Shirley's face but in the bush a girl must do what girl must do, so to the front down with stride and relief had be realise f'or both of us.
All comfortable now,let find those Cats. Ben knew where they were,we just had to get to them ,in the nation park cars must stay on the given track, that means no short cut across country. It took a least 15minutes to reach them ,but gee wiz was it worth it ,the pride we were viewing was the world famous Marsh Pride. There were 8 lions out of a possible 25 and they were in their sleep mode which allows them to get ready for the hunt that night. Shirley and I must have said the right thing to the animal gods ,for as soon as our jeep stop these magnificent creatures turn on a show meant for royalty ,stretching , rolling posing for profile pictures even getting up and chasing a white tailed rabbit or hare, not sure on that.
I hope you can visualise all that we have seen and are enjoying our safari ,there is so much more to come.
See you in the blog soon ,keep your imagination open.
Luv Shirley & Johnr
