Day 18 15/9/2018
Walking, Automobile, Sailing
Sunday morning ,bright sun shine ,a busy day ahead . It’s full of adventure , historical ,cultural and sailing. We begin with a walking tour of the town Stari Grad , here we learn that like so many of the other cities and town they have had many changes of rule as far back as 2,400 years ago. Greeks Roman Italians, just to name the prominent one. This show in the structure of the town, we have Greek ruins, Roman ruins . The Greek ruins have only been discovered in the last 5 to 10 years and the Roman ruin date back to the year of 200 B.C
The next part of the day is a short bus trip to the towns of Vrboska which is a similar town to Stari Grad. It is really difficult to pick the differences in the towns, all built in the same fashion, just with either more influence of the 3 previously mentioned. We do a walking tour here , it’s a good historical walk similar to the first in the morning.
We are now heading to the town Jelic here we are having a wine tasting and a meal called a Peker an authentic Croatian dish which is like using a targine to slow cook veal and chicken for 3 to 4 hours and towards the end throw in your vegetables. The wine tasting was first cab off the rank, a red , a ros’e , and a white, they did tell us the types but unfortunately for me I was indisposed, not that matters ,for me it was a blind tasting. For the record I found the Ros’e the best, followed by the White , then of course the Red, this was served with cheese and prosciutto , this was followed by a bowl of Veggie soup ,then the Peker . This was the first high light of the day, but as we were getting near the end of Lunch our tour director informed us we needed to get back to the bus by 2, it is now 1.35 and it took 45 minutes to here. If you haven’t ever been in a run away bus like us we have now , to the bus drivers’ credit he got back on time even if it meant going down a street clearly marked one way , opposite to our direction.
Within ten minutes we are under way to the town of Hvar , 2 hours away. The schedule calls for a swim stop and about and hour into our journey the captain pulls up in this pretty little cove and it all hands overboard, now don’t faint , Shirley went for a swim in the Adriatic Sea , I know unbloody believable.
All the guest are getting warm to each other with these ice breaking swims. The chatter is free flowing , from what books they have read to cooking duck, I off course use Shirley’s son Steve’s technique.
We arrive in Hvar at 5.30, there to meet us the walking guide we had had in the morning , we’re about to do the walking tour of Hvar. The guide gives her all to make this as interesting as she can, but , well, same old same old.
We are now free to do our own discovery work and Shirley and I are in a new place and new places call for traditional measures, so on release from the walking tour we find a little wine bar and sink a glass of white. Although it now after 6, we are not that hungry as lunch was huge so My tour guide had found a place called Fig owned by an Aussie Croatian and his American Partner.
This little place has the young crowd flocking to it ,and on this occasion we are oldest people there by along way. The menu is a simple one , but like most things in life ,the simple thing done right are the best , and our flat bread with candied fig, honeyed walnuts , watercress and crumbled feta was outstanding and also a reasonable price.
We are still not finish for the night, Shirley ears pickup some music and we are off to sip on a white, because this place charges, like a wounded bull, the guy singing is very good but we were a little late , he had played three songs and it was over, we finish our wine ,back to the boat. About 6 guest were having a nightcap and chatting about different travels and experiences so we joined for a while then time for bed .
So that is the time were I say goodnight to all.
Stay well, look after each other, see you all in the next blog.
Love Shirley and John
