I'm in pain. My legs feel like two waterlogged pieces of driftwood. Today ruled. A little bit of a rocky start when we ended up walking in the wrong direction to the train station. I swear this place is like the bermuda triangle! I even took out my compass (app) and one minute north was this way the other minute it was that way. so getting a little turned around could only have been expected. We ended up having to take a cab, which turned out to be quite reasonable. I think we got hosed by that one cabby in the monsoon. Any way, we made it to the train station with only 10 minutes and no idea had to buy tickets for the damn thing. But luck was on our side and we were not only able to buy our tickets but also to make it on the right train.
We arrived at Kutna Hora to the welcoming scent of the tobacco factory. A quick walk led us past the factory to the church it was connected to. That's right, Phillip Morris had become a wing of the church. The church itself was pretty spectacular but is was not why we had come to town. These dogs had some bones to sniff out!
The bone church was unreal! Each corner had a pyramid of bones, each adorned with a giant crown. The skeletons were warriors who died in battle and their bones showed it. The giant chandelier was uber creepy but utterly astounding. We definitely left with out bones chilled!!!
From there we walked a little around the local area, got a beer and a coffee, and then headed to the main town. It was quite the hike. And of course like the theme of the day we got lost in the windey alleyways. It's a good thing the place we were after was a giant church and we finally got to a place where we could see the top of it and off we were!
St. Barbara Cathedral loomed below us, but to our dismay there was a mass of landscaping work being done and it appeared the cathedral was closed. We took a few quick pics and headed across the street to a little restaurant. It wasn't the nicest place but it had charm, and beer! The food was fairly good for not being the most exquisite but overall the place was nice, plus it gave us a chance to rest out weary limbs and regroup.
We headed back down to the main part of town but decided we should take a few more pictures of the cathedral while we were there. We walked around the enormous structure adorned with multitudes of gargoyles and intricate details. The whole thing was intensely beautiful. As we walked around lo and behold there were people going in a side door!!! It wasn't closed after all!! Inside was just breathtaking, so many amazing pieces of art and carvings. We are so thankful it was actually open, it was by far one of the most memorable places we've been to so far.
After leaving the cathedral in awe we hung out in the town. We decided to go to the famous pub Dacicky. I got potato pancakes, but skipped the condiments as they cost a dollar extra! They really didn't need any anyway as they were delicious. Kim got a garlic soup which was just amazing! She was nice enough to share with me. After our beers we got the eff out of there! It's strange to be in bars that allow smoking. So thankful we don't have that problem back at home. It's just so unpleasant.
After we were done shopping and stuff we decided it was time to head back to the train station. But not before getting a mojito to go for the walk!! I highly suggest if you ever have a long walk ahead of you get a strong mojito as a walking buddy. It makes the time go by a lot faster.
As we neared the train station we felt that we were a little early so we decided to get one more drink at a little bar next to the tobacco factory which we were pretty sure was filled with the tobacco workers. It was a total dive bar but totally our speed.
We hurried back to the train station and were just in time. We found a nice little spot on board next to a kind little Indian man who was nice enough to share his music with us. Those earbuds were bumpin!!!! The trainride was for the most part uneventful, well besides getting fined! So here's what happened, the wretched ticketeer came by and saw that Kim had her feet up on the seat. The troll could not believe her eyes and flew into a tantrum yelling at us in her native goblin tongue! I had no idea what was going on so I kept trying to hand her my ticket thinking she must be stupid and forgot she already stamped it. But she just kept typing away on her little device that apparently gives you the power to be a superb****. She finally pointed to the screen that said we owed 100 kc (about $6) and flung her dragon arms about pointing at the spot Kim had her feet. I paid her off mostly just to get rid of the wench, but in the end I feel bad for her because she has an ugly soul and has to live with that on a daily basis.
After that whole ordeal we were back in Prague and wandering around the town for our last night. We picked up some postcards and stuff and then went for a drink! We stumbled upon just our kind of bar, The Buddha Bar!!! It had a 40 ft Buddha, fancy cocktails and a plethora of floating candles. Kim turned into a picture taking fiend, and got some great shots of the Buddha. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up on our wall when we get home.
Buzzing and hungry we decided it was time to get back to the hotel. We had been gone for a good 12 hrs. We decided to eat at this little outdoor beergarden that was right next to our hotel, but it was closed, so we opted instead to just go to the hotel bar. And thank god we did! The food was amazing!!! Kim had the goulash and I had the chicken 3 course special as it was a great deal! We shared caprice salad that was my first course, and the risotto that came with my main course was delicious. Kim's goulash was to die for! The sauce alone was great but the meat was so tender! It was a great way to end our last day in Prague. Tomorrow is a busy day as we have to get up early and fly to Venice!!!!!
