I usually hate travel days but this one was pretty painless. We got up at 6:30 to have breakfast at the hotel and were checked out by 7:45. We then hopped on the underground train to the bus-stop and like that we were at the airport! A little mocha-chino and before you could say schnitzel we were in the air! I guess the one thing that was kind of a bother was our seats on the plane. We were in the very first row, facing all the other passengers. They were kind of uncomfortable and I felt like everyone was looking at me. But the flight was just a little over an hour and a half so we didn't have to put up with it for long. Plus they had free wine!
We decided to get into Venice by boat, which seemed like it would be pretty simple as it let us off just down the way from our hotel. But in true John and Kim fashion we hurried off in the wrong direction bags in tow. We would not last long as travel guides or taxi drivers. But before we got too far from where we needed to go I bought a map and asked the girl behind the counter which way we actually needed to go. At least after Venice we won't have to worry about getting to a hotel until the very last night before we fly out. We will have to remember how to get back to the cruise ship though.
We checked in, changed our clothes, and hit the road. Venice is beyond beautiful. I seriously think I could live here and be constantly amazed by how stunning it is. We found a little hole in the wall spot to eat and got the best little lunch. It was a bunch of different toppings on a baguette. Doesn't sound that amazing but it was. It was mostly different fish themed toppings, and on the side was some whole sardines, these little mushroom wraps and feta cheese all over a bed of arugula. We may have to go back tomorrow it was so good.
After our little lunch we did our second favorite thing besides getting lost: walk. We walked the town over, and then some. (We didn't even realize how much we walked until we got back to the room because we left the map there, we were lucky to even find the hotel again honestly...) On our mighty walk we found a sangria stand, and got a couple roadies. They were damn good but expensive. Everything is expensive. We haven't even been here a full day and we've seriously put a dent in our budget. And except for the two little trinkets we bought it's all been on food and drinks! We'll have to try and be a little better tomorrow.
The other big issue we've discovered with Venice is that there isn't much of a hospitality market, at all. The people at the restaurants are just not that friendly. We got ignored at the first restaurant we wanted to go for dinner and got forgotten/ignored at the second place we wanted to go. We ended up eating dinner at a place that had way overpriced wine in the bottle, so we decided to skip drinks and just order a couple small dishes, which probably didn't make them very happy. I bet they make cash money off their wine sales.
I am very glad to be here, but honestly I am thankful we are only here two nights. It's an expensive town and for what we are paying to stay here we shouldn't be made to feel like we are inconveniencing anyone just because we want to eat at their restaurant.
Tomorrow is going to be awesome though! We kind of have a layout of the town, and it seems cheaper to stick to the off main road places to eat so we'll try that. And it is really a beautiful city and I can't wIt to go back out and just walk around it.
