(source Tortilis Camp Ltd)
Further to Tortilis' stand on eco-tourism and belief in the importance of education to the conservation effort, Tortilis has undertaken to raise funds for their local schools.
In this way, not only can they help by providing much needed supplies such as books, desks, blackboards, paint, better housing facilities etc, but at the same time it demonstrates to the children the importance of wildlife to their future as they experience first-hand the benefit of tourism to themselves and their community.Without this awareness in the coming generation, the conservation effort in Kenya cannot succeed.
Olgulului Primary School has approximately 400 pupils, the majority of them boarders from a wide catchment area around Amboseli. There are 9 classes with approximately 45 pupils in each class.
Tortilis Camp applied for Olgulului Primary School to be one of the beneficiaries of humanitarian work carried out by the British Army in Kenya and in the spring of 1998, 30 men from the Royal Engineers spent three months at Olgulului constructing a new dormitory and kitchen and reconnecting the water supply using materials supplied by Tortilis Camp.
Embarangoi School Project - Tortilis Camp is currently working on a project to rehabilitate the borehole at Embarangoi to provide water for a new school and the community area.Tortilis Camp is undertaking to move an unused school to the Embarangoi site and to extend the school facilities.
If you would like to assist with any of these projects you can do so by contacting management at Tortilis Camp
If you have any pens or paper etc that you would like to distribute to the local schools on your behalf, Tortilis is happy to do so.
