Left Melbourne this morning and flew to Uluru. The view from the plane was spectacular; especially Uluru (Ayres Rock) as we approached the airport. We were picked up by our tour company in the afternoon and went straight to Kata Tjuta which means 'many heads' in the local language. We went on a short guided tour to the 'Valley of the Winds' where we stopped to hear a little of the culture of the Anangu people who have lived around the rocks for 30,000 years!
We got back in the truck and went to a viewing area to see the sunset at Uluru. We had some bubbly and some snacks abd viewed the rock in an array of colours from the sunset. It was stunning! Unfortunately I dropped my camera into the sand which stopped it from working - not the best place to have to rely on an iphone for pictures!
We left Uluru and travelled a few minutes to our campsite for our evening meal (a bbq of kangaroo, steak and sausages with potato salad, coleslaw and salad). After dinner, a few of us went on a short walk with our tour guide to see a viewing point, away from any light pollution. We could see the outline of Uluru in the distance and millions of stars. The constellations were pretty easy to spot too. Wayne (our tour guide) told us some of the Anangu and Mala creation stories and drew some of the different aboriginal symbols in the sand. Back at the campsite; we had large tents set up with campbeds and bedding but were also given the option of sleeping out under the stars in a swag (an Australian bed roll). We went for this and it was beautiful! The moon was quite bright but early in the morning; it was amazing to wake up under the stars. The sky was beautifully clear.
