We got up very early, packed up camp, had breakfast and jumped on the truck to Uluru. We started the 10.6 km base rock in the dark and watched the sunrise from the base of Uluru. We were able to follow the walk at our own pace, rather than sticking together as a group. Uluru was magnificent. It is a sacred site and there are many rules under Tjukurpa law. It is so much bigger than I had imagined and there were so many different sights to see from the base walk. The array of colours on the rock were beautiful as the sun rose.
Once regrouped, Wayne took us on the Mala Walk and told us more about the traditions of the Anangu people as told to him by the elders. We went from here to the cultural centre; a small museum and art display.
We had some lunch back at the campsite and then jumped back in the truck to start our 4 hour drive to Kings Canyon. An hour into our journey, we pulled over to have a look at Mount Connor, known as 'fooluru' by the rangers. People often hire cars, drive to this point, take a few snaps and then turn back, thinking they've seen Uluru. We walked over the road to look at a salt lake and then got back on our way.
Once at the campsite, we collected some wood and started a campfire. Dinner was served shortly after, with a glass or two of wine. We toasted some marshmallows and had a chat around the fire. A dingo casually walked past which was pretty cool. It was a beautiful clear night and therefore we decided to sleep out under the stars, with the fire gently crackling away. Beautiful.
