Whitneys on Tour
We arrived here on Saturday 26th from Beunos Aires not without a little hassle. By a complete stoke of un-genius we got a taxi to the wrong airport in Buenos Aires then found out there was a pilots strike which caused us some serious worry whether we'd get on a plane at all. Fortunately we got here with a couple of hours delay and found the temperature considerably colder than Beunos Aires!!
We stayed at this really cool hostel called the Antartica which had a nice chill out area and was a welcome change from the rather noisy one we stayed at in Beunos Aires. Indeed, many of the people staying here were about to do Antartic tours themselves but at around a minimum of 1500 quid a trip it was a little out of our price range and not that we had the time anyway!
Ushuaia is a pleasant enough little town but what sets it apart is it's the southern most city in the world and also sits at the base of a number of mountains giving it quite a spectacular setting.
We spent both our two full days here hiking in the Tierra Del Feugo National park, our first serious trekking attempts of this trip. Being Whitney's we don't do things by halves and did a really difficult one on the first day which involved a seriously steep scramble through some forest and up a mountain. The going up was tough enough but for Stuart, the going down was even tougher!! However, the views were great and we enjoyed the 'workout'and eventually made it back after six hours or so but we were pretty stiff and sore for our troubles.
The next day we did another walk in the park which was a little easier but we were still feeling our aching limbs from the previous day. This was a walk along a more coastal route giving us some lovely views and photo's of the mountains and lake. One highlight for Jo was coming across a group of wild horses grazing on a hill next to the path.
We left Ushuaia on the 29th at 5.30 in the morning bound for Chile.
