Whitneys on Tour
We visited the Uruguayan resort of Punte Del Este. In the height of the season it\'s the Ibiza of South America but we\'ve arrived right at the start of the season so everything is really quiet. However, after a hard few days travelling it's was great to relax on the lovely beaches for a couple of days before heading back to Beunos Aires for a few days.
We first got to Beunos Aires on Saturday 19th and were planning to head for Punte straight away but we couldn't get on a boat so we got one to Colonia in Uruguay instead, about 5 hours west of there. This allowed us an afternoons preview of Beunos Aires and we were most impressed with what we found. An impressive, clean, sophistacted city with superb and cheap shopping. Girls, you\'d love it here and Jo was deeply upset that she wasn't allowed to buy anything! We\'ll be back in a couple of days for a few nights stay so we'll have more to say on it then.
We arrived in Colonia, Uruguay late on a Saturday night so finding somewhere to stay was a right hassle but I guess trudging round streets, not having a clue where you\'re going with heavy backpacks is all part of the travelling fun. Fortunately a young English girl we met coming off the boat who spoke excellent Spanish rather saved our bacon. We went out for a meal in this rather attractive port town and ordered what we thought would be a delicious pasta dish (given the nice meals the other diners were having) but instead two plates of plain pasta with tomato sauce on top arrived. Sometimes it really does pay to learn the lingo so you can read the menus!!
Next morning we headed straight for Punta and arrived at our hostel about 7km from the town centre. Trouble was it wasn't officially open for the season yet and we were the only guests there! It was a bit strange but the area was lovely and the beach georgous. The next day we moved into the main town to a nice cheap hotel. Punte was extroadinarily quiet and we walked for miles along the fabulous beach with the sun shining and hardly a soul in site. Bliss! Give it a month or two and it will be heaving with the beautiful people of South America posing in their skin tight swim suits and designer sunglasses.
