Living the dream
After leaving Alice Springs on Mon 8th of Oct we started to head up the Stuart Highway towards Katherine, we arrived at Barrow Creek which we thought might be our next nights accommodation but after a quick look decided to drive on until we got to Wycliffe Well (the most UFO sightings have been seen here) It was quite a neat park with some great paintings around the place, whilst there we saw Elvis, The Hulk, Some little green Martians and a couple of mules who I didn't meet until the morning, after hearing their footsteps at 5am in the dark (I can tell you that I was glad to get back to the van) Trav the photos are for you.
Our next night was at Banka Banka, after such a hot day we were looking forward the the air con, after paying our $20 we headed towards the campsite where we thought the power poles were. (Oops, no power) The campsites were lovely and shaded with lovely green grass where I spent most of the day laying with my ice water bottles.
We met a really nice couple who left their home in March this year and were travelling and working in caravan parks along the way. They were heading across to the east coast while we were still heading north.
Next stop Daly Waters, a delightful old pub that was built in the 1930's it is a place that you have to see, it to believe it. When walking in the front door you are confronted by anything and everything imaginable, on the front of the bar are business cards from all over world, the walls are covered with foriegn money, thongs (the ones for your feet), undies, bra, the other thongs, football jumpers AFL & NRL, number plates and too many things to mention. We hadn't had any luck catching barra so we thought that we would have the beef & barra that was on the menu.
Travelling from Daly Waters we stopped at Mataranka to look at the hot springs, unfortunately the little red winged bats had the same idea and thus making it a very smelly and noisy visit. Apparently they only come to this area at this time of year to eat the flowers on the eucalyptus trees.
We stayed at Katherine for 4 nights (4 for the price of 3), so it was nice to be able to kick back and relax for a bit. We went to Katherine Gorge and having been there 3 yrs earlier we decided not to do the boat trip and did the walk to the lookout over the gorge instead (about 4kms), it was good to see it from a different perspective.
Monday 15th we headed further north to Cooinda, staying for 2 nights, my only wish for the trip was to do the Yellow Water Cruise again and it didn't disappoint. We were lucky enough to see 4 eight day old Jacana chicks on a lilly pad with their father, they were soo tiny and cute and of course crocs, wild horses, cattle and many more bird spieces.
Wed 17th we stayed at Sth Alligator River and went to the Mamukala Wetlands, they hade a bird hide set up that was about 15metres long and you could just sit there and watch all the different breeds of birds interacting with each other, there were thousands of them.
