We headed from Noosa to Rainbow Beach on the 16th of May and sunbathed on the beach that afternoon. We then met our group for our Fraser Island encounter and went shopping as a group for the supplies we would need over the next three days and two nights.
So Sunday 17th May we head out to Fraser Island. There are eleven in the group including Grant and myself. So we are given a four wheel drive and some camping equipment and sent on our way with a map. We went over to Fraser Island on the Barge from Rainbow Beach. We headed straight to Lake Wabby on the Island. It is a lovely fresh water lake and we took our lunch there to eat with us. It was a forty-five minute walk from the carpark (or the beach) to the lake. It was a lovely day so we all managed to go in for a swim in the lake. There were loads of big fish in the water and even some turtles. In the evening we set up camp along the back of the sand dunes on the beach. This is my first proper camping experience and so I learned how to pitch a tent etc. Was really good fun and not half as bad as what I expected it would be like. So we all sat round with some wine and beer and our pasta. There were another group doing the same trip as us and they set up camp next to us, so after dinner the two groups sat together and one of the girls had a guitar, so poeple were singing along. We saw a Dingo which came right up close to us all, in search of food no doubt.
The second day on Fraser Island we got up early and headed to Lake McKenzie. This is another fresh water lake and the most beautiful on the Island. We spent a lot of time here in the water and having lunch. Unfortunately it started to rain slightly so we decided to pack up and head to our camp site and set up our tents. We then did a short walk through the rainforest. It started to rain quite heavily at night while we were sleeping and we woke up and all our tents were soaking, we were lucky that it was our last night.
The following morning we went straight to the Maheno Shipwreck which has been on the Island since 1935. The ship was originally built in Scotland in 1905 which was quite cool. We then stopped at Eli Creek on the way back down the 75 mile beach. We got back to Rainbow Beach and had to clean out the car and hand it back. The group went out for some dinner and farewell drinks at night.
