Jen's Travel Diary
Wednesday afternoon - We got to the marina at 12.45 ready to board our boat to sail the Whitsundays. The crew met us at the marina entrance and went over the general rules and regulations of the "Wings" boat on which we would be sailing. The Crew: Captain Dave, Harry, Johnny and Jas. The boat was really nice; it had a lot of space with good sized bedrooms (for a boat!), big living and eating area - with a DVD player, nets on the front on the boat on which you could sunbathe and lots of seating to. Then after all the introductions and bedroom arrangements we set sail at 1.30pm! Captain Dave had to use the engine, not the sails, as there was not enough wind. We sailed for 2h to "South Molle Island" where the group did a 2h walk to the lookout - which provided great view over the Whitsundays area. I could not go on the walk as my foot was still very bad and the walk was on a steep incline - boo, so stayed on the boat and chatted to the crew (who gave me crisps and a cuppa!) But Annie and Neeley really enjoyed the walk and the view, taking some photos on the way. When the group got back a Nachos snack was waiting for them, which went very quickly! Dave then sailed us a little further before dropping the anchor for the night. Before dinner we all sat around and chatted, getting to know each other (there are 25 of us). We made friends with Hannah, Paul and Liv (UK) and Alison, Hazel and Mel (Ireland). The dinner was an amazing buffet; lots of salad, noodles, veggies and meat. After dinner we watched a slide show on the days adventures before the drinking and party games started. Annie, Neeley and I decided to go and watch "Mystic River" instead.
Thursday - Up early today (6.30am), it was a task to get dressed as we were still sailing!! Breakfast was really good; fresh fruit, cereal and muffins. Then we had to clean our teeth, off of the back of the boat! Captain Dave then dropped anchor and the group got off of the boat and walked to "Whitehaven Beach". I could not walk so Harry took me on the dingy. The beach looked stunning, it had clean white sand and was surrounded by green forest and clear bright blue sea - WOW! We could not land at the beach as the waves out at sea were really strong so I just went back to the boat and read my book until the group returned. Then Dave raised the anchor and we set sail for "Luncheon Bay", when we got there we had very filling sandwiches for lunch. Ater a bit of sunbathing it was time for snorkelling! I could do this!! Annie and Neeley went for a 30mins intro scuba dive, which I could not do due to my foot. We all had to put on our sexy looking "stinger suits" and snorkelling gear and then got on the boat to the beach. I partnered up with Liv and we snorkelled on the reef!! It was so good; I saw black and white striped fish, a rainbow fish and some really colourful shoals of fish. The coral, although not fully in season, was colourful too! We then headed back onto the boat and were allowed a 30secs shower (and I managed to have one too!). I then watched the sunset over the water, it was a stunning sight what with the reflection in the water. In the evening we had another georgeous dinner and then sat and watched the slide show.
Friday morning - Up early to enjoy our last day on the boat. We were still moored at "Luncheon Bay" and stayed there to do some more snorkelling. After breakfast we all put our gear on and jumped off the back of the boat and swam to a different part of the reef. We saw lots of fish and coral but also saw "Elvis" - a gigantic fish that is the same size as a bodyboard!. He is also a local celebrity! After a couple of hours we then got back onto the boat and set sail back to 'Airlie Beach'. Captain Dave decided that the wind was good enough to put the sails up! We docked at 12.30pm.
I had such a great trip eventhough I could not do all the activities. The crew looked after us so well, the food they made was really healthy and they were a good laugh too. They were especially understanding about my foot and went out the way to help me around the ship and with the activities. I also had many names - hoppy, hippidy hop, limp and hoppy leg. The snorkelling was really good fun, and I saw so many fish! What a great way to spent 3 days, I think I could yet get used to living on a boat!
