Jen's Travel Diary
Today (Saturday) we arrived in "Townsville" on the Greyhound and then took the $17 ferry to 'Magnetic Island'. We arrived at the island at 6pm and checked into "Arkies" backpacker hostel in "Arcadia resort"- paying $20 for 2 nights!! They are very basic dorm rooms, although they do have en-suite. There is very tiny kitchen, a on site bar and pokies room. In the evening we managed to find the fish and chip shop, which was one of the only things open (at 8pm on a saturday night!) and had a bite to eat.
Sunday - We had a bit of a sleep in before getting up to explore the island. It is fair to say that it is very quiet here. 'Magnetic Island' is divided into 4 resorts, and there is a local bus service that travels between them. But these resorts only cover the east side of the island, this is due to the fact there are no roads on the west. It is a very random place as the resorts are very small and there is not a great deal to do. We took the bus from "Arcadia" to "Nelly Bay" and then walked to "Base backpackers" - which is in the middle of nowhere. Then we had a spot of sunbathing on the beach, which was not very impressive, before taking the bus back. Then in the afternoon we strolled to "Alma bay", just over the road from our hostel, which was a very small beach area. We have decided that due to the quietness of the place we will be leaving tomorrow.
