Jen's Travel Diary
Monday - Today we all left 'Cairns' Neeley and Annie went on a 2 day 1 night 'Cape Tribulation' trip and I took the free bus up to 'Port Douglas'. The hostel that I am staying here is called "Dougies" and is well nice! It is really clean, with huge dorm rooms, a new toilet and shower block, a large kitchen, pool and bar. Its also set well back from the road and only 15mins walk from the centre of town. After unpacking I decided to walk into town, 'Port Douglas' is really nice and quiet. The "4 mile" beach is stunning and I walked up to the lookout to get a great view over the coastline. The main street has been developed, with many cafes and posh shops, but it has been done tastefully. After pottering around town I went back to the hostel to call Lynn and Paul Herron (I stayed with his father Roy and mother Fran Herron in Melbourne). They live in 'Mossman" and run a Safari business up in this area of 'Queensland'. They asked me over for dinner and Richard (older son-20) came and picked me up. It was really nice to meet them (Anthony the younger son-17 was also there) and we had a great roast dinner and chatted about the UK, OZ, my trip and their businesses. I had a really good evening, great people!
Tuesday - Today was an absolutely brilliant sunny day so I sat by the pool and chilled out reading my book. Then in the late afternoon I headed into town to get my dinner and whilst I was gone Lynn left a message to say that she would pick me up tomorrow for a trip! Then after dinner Shona (my OZ dorm mate) and I went to the bar and chatted and played pool! Also in the bar was Jess (from the Whitsundays trip) and her friend so I talked to them for a while too. DISASTER: my mini-disk has broken!!!!! AGH
Wednesday - Today I went to 'Kuranda'.
Thursday - Today was another really hot and sunny day (they all have been here in 'Port') so I decided to walk down to the "Marina Village". The harbour is really nice with very clear blue sea and lots of posh boats. The "Village" has lots of fine restaurants and shops. I spent some of the morning and afternoon updating my website before heading to the post office to send some parcels back to the UK - at $50 which is a very resonable price! I then went back to the hostel where I spent the rest of the afternoon laying by the pool reading my book - it is just so nice to do what with the rainforest backdrop and the relaxed atmosphere. I then met up with Shona and Emma and we went down to the bar in the evening and met up with loads of the guys we knew for a few drinks and a chat.
Friday - Today I went to 'Cooktown'.
