Jen's Travel Diary
Sunday - Today we began the drive across to 'Te Anau', on the southern west coast of 'New Zealand'. We took "route 64" across the country through 'Gore' and 'Manapouri'. The scenery was stunning, clear blue lakes shimmered in the winter sun and the snow capped mountains ran alongside the roadway. "Lake Manapouri" was especially beautiful, we managed to catch it just as dusk was falling and so had the sun providing really colourful skies. We reached 'Te Anau' after 5h driving and booked into "Lakeview Backpackers", right on "Lake Te Anau". It is $23 a night (and $25 a night including duvets - much to Neeley's dismay!). It was really cold in our room as we were only provided with an electric heater, which was usefully set on a 30mins timer GREAT! We decided that due to the cold we would have to sleep in hats and socks and Neeley decided to go that one step further and actually sleep in all her clothes! Our roommates Matt and Jenny (both UK) decided that to warm up they would go to the pub, an idea that we all shared! So after a few pints and games of pool at "The Moose" we all were nice and warm. We met a group of 3 guys at the pub, who were also staying at "Lakeview Backpackers" and so we all decided that the next day we would head to 'Milford Sound'.
Monday - Today we all drove down to 'Milford Sound'. It was quite a difficult journey as we encountered snow and icey bendy roads that had been gritted the night before. On the journey we passed the "Mirrored lakes", which reflected the snowy mountains in there clear blue water. The views from the road were pretty stunning too, breathtaking mountainous views! We did stop for a random snowball fight on the road to 'Milford Sound' and then about 1h30 into the journey were reached "Homer Tunnel". The mountain rockface had been drilled through with a tunnel created underneath, it was really steep! Once at 'Milford Sound' we purchased tickets for the 2.45pm sailing of "Mitre Peak Cruises", the boat was really nice and the cruise took 2h. We passed "Mitre Peak", "Bowen Falls", "Stirling Falls" and "Mount Pembroke". The mountain and falls were beautiful, although it was a little misty. We then all headed back to 'Te Anau' via the tretcherous road, which was difficult for Neeley to drive as the cloud was low and rain started to fall. We spent our second night in the YHA which was so much nicer (and warmer) and only $24 a night with duvets included. We went out for a drink and a few games of pool with Matt - it was quite quiet in town but it is the low season here.
Tuesday - Today we drive to 'Queenstown'.
