Jen's Travel Diary
Friday - Well at 7am this morning Annie went and met her "Kiwi Experience" bus to start her trip. Then at 9am Neeley and I were met by the man from "Quality Car Rental" and we went to pick up our car! It is $18 a day with full AA cover and insurance - which is very good. We have got a Nissan Sunny '98 which is automatic and in a beautiful shade of white. We then filled up the car with petrol ($1.29 a litre - very cheap) and set off on our journey to explore 'New Zealand'! I drove the first leg of the journey down from 'Christchurch' to 'Dunedin', which is on the south eastern side of 'New Zealand'. We decided upon 'Dunedin' as we thought that it would be a good place to start, but also that the Lions Rugby Tour was visiting there on Saturday and we maybe able to get a cheap ticket. The journey itself was 5h so Neeley and I took turns driving. The journey was really scenic, we followed the coast road through the quaint town of 'Timaru' and reaching 'Omaru" - where the blue penguins could be found (we missed then by 1h!). Then we reached 'Dunedin' by 5pm which enabled us to try and purchase tickets for the game tomorrow, and we got them too! $45 to see the Lions play 'Otago' - which is the local team in 'Dunedin'. We then went to find our hostel on "Foley Road", "The Queens Gardens". It is $19 a night but it is fair to say its freezing and in need of repairs! But it is close to the town centre and cheap - so that is what sold it to us! Food was the next priority and so Neeley and I headed out down "George Street" and grabbed a Chinese. Then an early night was called for as we were knacked from driving.
Saturday - We spent the night in the freezing room (even with an electric heater) and awoke in the morning in need of hot food. The hostel is in need of renovation as it is very cold and quite rundown. But on the positive the kitchen had a microwave so we could have porridge! Neeley and I then set off on a little sightseeing tour of 'Dunedin'. We walked up "George Street" - the main road in town - and reached the "Octagon". This is the main square in town and is where all the pubs are situated, and due to the match so was a a big screen. We walked passed all the eateries on "George Street" and also past quite a large shopping centre and lots of student housing. We then followed the road round and found "Northern AFC" and watched the local football match for a bit. We then set off to find the "Worlds Steepest Street" - "Baldwin Street" and decided to walk up it, and it was true it was incredibly steep!! After a rest at the top, to enjoy the view, we desended the street and headed back into town. We stopped for a late lunch and passed "Dunedin's" gothic cathedral on "George Street". Then after a quick change - adding extra layers - we headed down to "Carrisbrook" stadium to watch the match. It was really busy in town with loads of Lions supporters in their shirts and holding flags. It was such a good atmosphere with all the fans mixing together with no trouble. The stadium was really impressive and the match was not to bad either. We were sat really near the halfway line and so got a superb view of the action. It finished Lions 30 - Otago 19. One thing that I could not believe was that in New Zealand the crowd are allowed to take beer and wine into the game, there is no prohibition on alcohol! After the match we headed back to the hostel to warm up (yeah right!).
Sunday - Today we are driving to Te Anau and Milford Sound.
