We left Broome and headed for Fitzroy Crossing (home of the might "Fitzroy River, so all the guide books said). At last Ray would be able to spend a couple of days doing some serious fishing. The campsite was near the river and 4 stars - all was looking good. As we had seen some crocs swimming in another river we had crossed Ray asked if it was safe to fish. "O yeah no probs we do have crocs but they are freshwater so they will hiss at you, just move on as they are very territorial," replies the receptionist. Ray assured her that if they hissed at him he would be walking on water!
After a bit of a disagreement I condescended and tagged along as Ray was once again not showing the signs of a 'trained professional killer.' We walked along some very dry dirt tracks with bush all around - you could smell our fear. We reached the river only to find a rather steep twenty foot bank - the river was low because IT'S THE DRY SEASON!!!! There was no way I was going down there and Ray made a sharp comment that if Ian was with him they would get down. Well he didn't he had moi!!!! He was itching to get near the river as he said it looked really fishy but I told him he was on his own!!!!!!
At the risk of Ray having to deal with me hissing at him, we decided that perhaps this wasn't going to be such a good fishing trip and headed back to the van. Somehow I managed to get hundreds of tiny thorns in my crocs which were like glass in my feet. Ray had them in the soles of his but not inside. It took us the next two hours to pick them out with tweezers. Strange our crocs were giving us more trouble than the real ones!!!!!
As food and drink are more in our line the Sunday roast buffet seemed a good option; not Ray's favourite but think he was trying to get on my good side. Not what we were expecting. The meat was good - lamb, beef and pork - but the veg and gravy not the best and where were the yorkshires, mint sauce, apple sauce and stuffing. Now we are starting to sound like moaning British tourists. Such is life and we went to bed to dream about roast dinners and fishing.
Onwards to Kununurra where we hope to experience the Bungle Bungles and the Ord River.
Miles to date 3000+
