Gisborne and the Bay of Poverty - nothing to do with our financial situation but by all accounts got its name when Captain Cook called in there to get some groceries in 1769 but was not given a very friendly reception by the Maoris so he went off with no supplies and said it was 'poverty bay' and the name stuck.
Gisborne was developed some 60 years later and according to local information is a very ferrtile and sunny area. Being the most easterly city in NZ it is the first city in the world to see sunrise.
Just a coffee break for us we found it much the same as any other town/city in NZ but couldn't miss the opportunity to take our photo under Captain Cook's statue - being the great explorers that we are ha ha!!
The weather has been good today; sun and 16 deg so we now have the will to go on and see the rest of NZ (fairweather travellers obviously). Over to the Bay of Plenty.
