"We're Walking In Memphis"....listen to the song...we've done it...woo!!
Yes, with the back packs gone we decided hostels weren't for us either, so we checked into the Artisan on Union Street, complete with two double beds, TV, Swimming Pool!!!...own bathroom and towels...oh how we miss towels! Headed straight out for Beale Street...ate and saw a singing Elvis...he rocked...although he didn't like Denise and continually ignored her attempts to get him to sing to her...git!
Next day was Graceleand, felt the love for Elvis big time! His house is amazing and not all that tacky considering. Your not allowed upstairs so we didn't see the toilet...disappointing! It was so cool to see all the Gold Records/costumes and soak up the atmosphere in general...Elvis songs play all the way round...woo hoo! You see the graves too which was sad...some kid was like i don't wana see the grave, I wana see the toilet...how cant you laugh at that?! We took the 'extra' tour too and saw his planes...I think we will upgrade to planes like that at some point on our trip!
As it was saturday night we went to Beale...was really cool! Drank lots and met "Big John" and "Bobby"...our band member friends. Went to some club which was an experience in itself...the men were like flies to s*** (they had been drinking for a few hours) and there were an old couple practically at it on the dance floor...mums and dads, don't get ideas! Chris then treated us to hotdogs (he knows us well)...I think out of guilt because he wasn't allowed in a club due to his white t-shirt being a "gang colour"! Nice!
Next day was spent sunbathing by the pool (we need rest days!) and cinema that night (nicest ice-cream!). Following we went to Rock & Soul and Civil Rights museums (via the Peabody shopping mall!). On the way a police car pulls up and is like, "ladies are y'all from round here...you know your headed to area full of crack heads and w****s...jump in I'll take y'all to where you wana go!" Go on!!! We nearly wet ourselves laughing! Civil Rights was an eye opener...very educational and we saw where Martin Luther King was shot. It was so strange, the museum is the hotel converted so it looks as it did. Then inside you walk into an area where they have reproduced the motel room as it would have been and walk to the window and are a few feet away from where he was shot. We cant say enough how eerie it felt. Plus it was also shocking to compare the sights of Elvis, JFK and Martin Luther King. King had nothing compared to the others.
Anyways, on a lighter note we walked to Mississippi River and ate in Crab Shack (lovely name!) then saw some live bands that evening who were fantastic! Vince John rocked! We tried to video but due to lack of knowledge of our cameras just got a few seconds of the band!
Loved Memphis!!! Rock & Roll!!!!! xx
