Day 24 - 12 May. A cool clear day out visiting Stonehenge with Sam and our cousin Debbie Grimmett.
The day started with Nigel (our host and Debbie’s brother) taking Sam and I to visit his father (Dad’s brother) my Uncle Bruce, 95 years old, now living in a nearby retirement home. I was very impressed how well Bruce looked - the last of his generation, a real Mohican. He told me I looked like his Dad , only I had more hair!. I took it as a compliment that he recognised the Grimmett genes.
We drove on through the mad motorway traffic - these English drive way too fast - and 15min we got to Hartley Whintney (weird names these places have - is this even English?) where Debbie lived. It was good for both Sam and I to see her. We worked out that it must have been 40+ years since we’d last been in Debbie’s company - when Sam was just a baby. I liked hearing Sam chatting on so comfortably with all these long lost relations. He distinguished himself with honour and, I kept thinking that Sam could well be the greatest son that ever lived.
We hopped into Debbie’s car and it was off to Wiltshire, Stonehenge. We got there with 100s of other tourists, walked for miles, got the T shirt and was totally impressed by the new visitor’s centre not to mention the sarsuns themselves.
We even ate a packed lunch (thanks Debbie) sitting on a log in the woods and thinking of Pooh Bear.
Next was a visit to Avebury (not far down the road) and the biggest stone circle in the UK. Nice place, sheep grazing around this big wide stone circle that practically surrounded a little old village. We tested the local scones, cream and jam with a double shot medium Americano (the nearest thing to a long black I could find)
Finally, we went to Lacock (old 17thC village) for one pic of Sam outside Harry Potter’s house - bragging rights for subsequent discussion with Coral.
Then it was back home to Debbie’s place, pizza for dinner, delivery back to Nigel’s place, full debrief on the day’s activities and finally SLEEP!! A truly memorable day. :)
