Day 29 - sunny day touring the south and east of Northern Ireland.
8.00am kickoff - along a bunch of backroads, past a lot of new pakatial country houses - must be money here), over the Mountains of Mourne (hills actually, but felt remote. bit like Central Otago - see pic. still growing potatoes) and breakfast at Neptunes Locker Cafe, Kilkeel harbour. Heaps of fishing boats and a bunch of old duffers telling bulls*** stories at the cafe.
Then a quick drive up to Belfast via Killinchy - old Tom Hughes was buried at Killinchy Cemetery near Dunsandel NZ. Killinchy turned out to be a small village just like all the rest. I focused on the old linen weaving factory area in Belfast - now a fanct cafe-bar area. Had an Americano, double shot, small cup (almost a long black) and an Irish fat cooked cheese sandwich. Not too bad - better than the rest of the food I’ve had here in N Ireland. Too many people in Belfast and parking was scarce - so after spending 20mins looking for my car (took a while to find the street I’d parked it in) I was off to see the Giant Causeway up on the NE coast - all these basalt octagonal pillars at the seashore - the causeway to Scotland built by the giant Finn McCool - so he could go over and bash up all the Scottish giants.
After wandering round thete for couple hours it was time to head back to Portadown and a bed. Big day!
I was so desperate to avoid Irish stodgy food I bought a mix of cut fruit, yogurt and some digestives for tea.
Scotland tomorrow- yeh!
