If Potosi was bllody freezing then Uyuni is something else. What an unusual place, set amist a desolute plain in the middle of nowhere, bleak, bleak, bleak. Once fueled by the steam industry now a shade away from a ghost town but for the tourists visiting the salt flats. The salt flats are amazing. The largest salt flats in the world mile after mile of white salt. We are in a group of 6 (great group) all piled into a 4x4 for our 3 day journey to Chile. Stopped off at Incawasi Island (the inca house) set in the middle of the salt flats pops up this island filled with giant cacti! Hmmm. Visisted the Salt hotel where you sleep on beds of salt (everything is made of salt) very bizzare but very cool. As we reach the end of the salt flats after driving all day our jeep gets stuck in a mixture of salt and mud....2 hours and 18 people later...we finally get back in the jeep. The only consulation was that we got to see an amazing sunset on the flats...awsome. Arrive gladly at our accomodation. A concreate, non heated room with 6 beds and no hot water... just what you need after freezing your bum all day! The food is great though, lots of soup to keep us warm. Because we are in such a remote place the skys are amazing. The most amazing star gazing ever...never before have we seen the sky sparkle like fairylights or been able to distinguish constellations so clearly, truly worth the freeze! Day 2 The day of the numb bums. Sandwiched between Mark (Irish bit of a pattern forming!) and Jay in the back of a 4 x 4 with frequent bloody freezing stops to visit sights. Visited a live volacano (ok we looked at one in the distance) and a desert coral filed that was once under water. Lama, lama everywhere but not a bite to eat! At times it is hard for the brain to cmprhend the different and amazing landscapes we see everyday. Spend the night in a freezing cow shed (helped by the beer we found and a new card game) Day 3 get up at stupid o'clock and drive off in the dark for 1.5 hours to see the sun rise over the red lake. On the way we saw the most fearce geysers. Arrive at the lake before dawn and witness the most lovely sun rise. Other groups turn up and some of the crazies take a dip in the hot springs...not a chance. There is ice on the inside of the truck windows even after an hours drive with 8 passengers...in addition to lama's the lake is also home to many pink flamingos always thought they only lived in hot places (too much Miam Vice as a kid I guess)!. Off the the Chilean border...
