Today we survived Death Road...This was one of the reasons we came to Bolivia (saw someone wearing an à survived Death Road'T shirt in Peru) We left La Paz and went further up into the mountains to 4780mtrs (v. Cold). Got geared up, strapped little Tel to the handlebars, drank a very alcoholic  toast to Paccha Mamma (mother Earth) and set off...hurtled down the highway overtaking large lorries on hairpin bends and generally feeling scared...stopped for a break with the group to be told the gravel road we had now reached was the start of Death Road (Yikes). In total 64kms downhill on the worlds most dangerous road. At one point there were 200 fatalaties on this road annually and it (apparently) is also a good place to throw opposing political members off. Gives a new meaning to landslide victory! The road at times is 3 mtrs wide with 400mtr vertical drops, but we survived it and have got cool t shirts to prove it!!! We finished the ride at just over 1000mtrs in the high jungle (v.warm) and visited an animal rescue park for our lunch. Decided to stay the night and stayed in Coroico in a room with uninterrupted views of the mountains. (cost us $12 so a bit of a splurge).Â
P.s. of course we saw a few drunk Bolivians along the way, mostly at the police check points?!
