Not sure where to begin! We continued our game hunt in Etosha National Park and after initially seeing a couple of rhino's charging each other in the distance, we thought we were in for a big day. During the morning we stopped at the Etosha Pan, a giant inland salt lake that fills during the rainy season, very similar to Lake Eyre and equally as impressive. As it got closer to lunch time and all we were seeing were springbok, giraffe and oryx we were becoming a bit disheartened. We stopped for lunch at Halali, another campsite half way through the park, and relaxed for an hour or so. All keen to get back out, we hit the road again, convinced that we had to see something a bit more exciting! We were not disappointed. After a false start when Jarrod briefly saw a leopard in the bushes, only for it to disappear before the rest of us had a chance to see it, only a short distance down the road another appeared, so casually from the bushes and wandered down the road behind us. We reversed back as it made its way back into the scrub and to our amazement it decided it had had enough of us following, and climbed up a tree only 20 metres from the road. There it sat watching us intently as we clicked away madly taking photos. Not thinking we could possible top this, we drove away on a high, content that at least we had seen one big cat today. Then on the final road heading to our campsite, with only about 30 minutes left of our drive, we rounded a bend and spotted a huge rotting rhino carcass. Initially with our eyes on that we failed to see the huge male lion sitting contently with a full belly. We watched him for a few minutes and then from out of the bushes came his female companion. That caught his attention and he got up, walked over to her, and after a bit of sniffing, growling and play fighting, they mated! We laughed, commenting that there is nothing like a bit of rotting rhino to get you in the mood! So we sat for a while, only metres away, watching them eat and interact with each other, while keeping an eye on the hovering hyenas, hoping for some leftovers. Very cool. From here our last treat for the day was a giraffe just off the side of the road, being up near his level in our truck, we go some great close up photos as he posed for us. During the day we also spotted impala, tortoise, gemsbok, wilder beast, and lots of other animals and bird life. An unforgettable day.
