Today we left Etosha, packing up in the rain, and hitting the road early. We stopped for supplies in Grootfontein in the heart of the Namibian diamond mining area. From here we stopped to visit a local school, Hausiku Wakina Primary School. This was a strange experience, makes you realize how privileged we are in Australia to have such good education. These kids struggle to get pens and exercise books. So we all came with the gift of stationary! And some symbols of Australia, a couple of koalas (thanks Mum!). We had lunch on the side of the road near the school. This meant that as the kids had finished for the day, they hovered around us hoping for food. We all felt really uncomfortable about this. It seemed to us that we were just further enforcing the division between us and them. Further down the road we left our truck and took a boat to our campsite on the banks of the Kavango. For N$50 each (About $9 Australian) we were given the option to upgrade from tents to bungalows. Needless to say we all went for that. So nice to have a solid floor to stand on, a soft mattress and our own bathroom! We sat around with a couple of beers looking over the river and across to Angola. We chatted to our new friends, all getting along well. As we are similar people have lots to talk and laugh about.
