Our last town, before heading to Kathmandu to fly out of Nepal, was Bhaktapur, the third largest city in Kathmandu Valley. Bhaktapur is a very strange little medieval city-state, from the outside it looks just like the outskirts of Kathmndu with the mess, traffic, noise and general chaos but then you pay ~$15AUD to enter the central area and everything transforms into another place entirely. The streets and buildings are all made from clay bricks and stone pavers, there is no rubbish and very little traffic. The whole area is filled with temples and other structures of religious significance surrounded by local Nepali people going about their daily lives, selling their produce, sitting on street sides and more or less enjoying a simple laid back life style.
We found Bhaktapur to be the perfect place to relax and enjoy watching the world go by while we sat atop temples or in rooftop cafes bathed in sunlight.
