Mediterranean 2012
We are traveling from Itea to Athens and we will pass through 'The Corinthian Channel'. This channel is 6kms long and 23 meters wide. From the sea bed to the top of the cliff is about 40 meters. It is all man made and quiet extraordinary. It was first started by the Roman emperor Nero in 67AD. He is supposed to have the first strike with a gold pick. Then, he had 6000 Jewish slaves do the digging. The work was halted due to a war with the Galls, and finally finished by French engineers in the 19th century.
We had to wait our turn to go through, about one hour. The trip through with the aid of current took about 35 minuets. It is very scenic and seemingly narrow. We have now entered the Aegean sea and on to Athens.
