We arrived in Corfu Greece to meet Randal Marsh who was flying in from Paris to join us with Marcus and Nora on our trip to Athens.
The trip from Siracusa overnight,200 nautical miles, was on flat calm sea. It was very restful. We arrived at the island of Corfu just before lunch then immediately took off on our push bikes to explore and have a swim. The marina is one of the best Paul has been in, modern very good service, good and honest people.
After lunch we hire a guide to look at the old city, it is a real surprise. The island has been strategically important as it lies mid way between east and west. It has been occupied by many nations in its history such as the Venetians for over 400 years to the 1700's.
The Architecture of the new city is predominantly Venetian in style, it is a very well planned city and a very aesthetically pleasing style.
The French occupied the Island for a short period under Napoleon and erected a substantial building with colonnaded shops facing the well landscaped park, which in turn abuts the ancient Fort on the waterfront.
Our guide took us a walking tour of the city with good looking shops and the main Greek orthodox church which houses the extraordinary relics of St. Spyridon. He is in an elaborate silver casket which they open once a week to view the body that is amazingly preserved after some 1500 years. They also venerate the St. by kissing his feet. All up a very nice city.
Back onboard BP the JB and Nora indulge in luxury on the back deck having manicure and pedicure with Gin and Tonic.
We had a late dinner as Randal arrived late. It was good to hear all his adventures from Morocco, London and Paris.
Friday, we take Randal to see the city. Janet tried to venerate the St. but is restrained by the priest due to incorrect procedure. MB and Esther go to the market to buy fruit and veg and fish. It is a very good market with lots of fresh produce. JB buys a DVD of Zorba the Greek which we watch after dinner.
We leave about 11 am and go to Paxi Island a cute fishing village with small restaurants and cafes lining the water. Everyone swam to shore except JB who took a jet ski in with Nora on the back. it's very warm and beautiful here.
