Our tour started in the city of Berlin as we drove around on the contiki bus, familiarizing ourselves with the map and specific locations. We had a quick stop along the Berlin wall, learning the history of the east and west side of Berlin as well as admiring the graffitti art the covered the wall.
We passed many famous monuments and buildings such as the reichstag building and the Olympic stadium, before heading out of the city to Sachsenhausen museum and memorial (concentration camp). The area was moving, a feeling that is indescribable. I was glad that I was able experience and see the history of the camp. But it is a sad place and hard to understand how human beings could be treated in such a horrific way.
Our bus dropped us back into the city for some free time. I walked around the Christmas markets by myself before heading back to the hotel to get ready for our eye spy tour. We learnt a lot about the history of the Nazis, the spies, the death strip and many amazing escape stories. One story that amazed me was how around 50 people were able to escape from the east over to the west via an underground tunnel. There were many people who became spies for the police so it was always extremely hard to keep a secret. The only reason why quite a few people escaped was because a specific spy had got the wrong date. So how did he get the wrong date???... Those who had permission to switch between the different sides of the wall take a note thy had a code written on it. They would go to a park and place this note somewhere. From there it was up to the people to find where this was hidden so they could read the note. After reading and deciphering the code, they would eat it so that it couldn't be found! The spy didn't decipher it correctly and therefore told the Germans the wrong date of the escape!
We had our own eye spy tour, but our first stop was a funky bar where. We each had a drink included. This was a shisha bar so our table ordered a fruity flavour. I didn't try any of it myself, but those who did seemed to enjoy it. I was able to take pictures of them all
We were split into groups to discover notes and clues around the city before ending up at our last stop where we each were given a shot. From there we partied on to a German night club and had an absolute
ball with the contiki group, pulling out all dance moves possible.
