We are so lucky this campground is actually used by loads of Elks and their calves and as we walk around they are literally everywhere - huge things! Jacq takes a selfie with an Elk, "selkie", and we make tracks for Jasper town to check our emails (boring solicitor stuff) whilst there we find a cafe that does coffee, laundry and Wi-Fi so we take full advantage and grab a couple of flat whites.
Our flat sale situation demands that we stay near Jasper tomorrow with access to a scanner, if we go further into the mountains we won't be able to get back for days so Jacq finds a local library that offers free Wi-Fi and desktops with use of a scanner - sorted! Just a shame we have to hang around the same campsite tonight as we really wanted to get moving - so much to see!
We decide to head out to Maligne lake, it's about 60km, on route we see a Cinnamon Bear darting across the road. We reach the lake in about 90 mins going touristy slow hoping to spot a Moose or Grizzly Bear. We see Black Bears and arrive at the lake around 3pm. It's gorgeous - it's the biggest in the park and so pretty with a wooden boathouse and evergreens in the foreground. Jacq get some snaps but Matt goes to enquire about the boat trips at the information desk - conversation goes something like this:
Matt "excuse me I was wondering if you could give me some details on the boats running please?"
Old hag at desk "too early!!"
Matt "too early in the day or season?"
Old hag "you see that white stuff out there? That's called ice"
Matt "oh ok I haven't been out there yet - is it a long tour?"
Old hag "its 22 km long!!!!" (Like he's an idiot) Matt walks away vowing to nominate her for customer service rep of the year!
Jacq was not present for this, thank god.
So, we nap in the van near the lake and head back towards Jasper stopping at Jasper Park Lodge (posh hotel for rich people who like golf but has the most amazing lake) Edith lake (full of locals having a BBQ) and head back to our Whistlers campsite.
As we arrive a group of lads next door are having a fire, we get talking and Matt discovers they are in a band on tour from Nova Scotia and have similar influences to him they are called "Alert the Medic" no idea why?! Apparently available on iTunes. We chat away and crash early hoping to move on tomorrow.
