We actually woke up feeling surprising refreshed after our long slog yesterday at the temples. Although the wats were amazing, we were both relieved not having to go out in that heat again!
After resting for most of the morning we had decided to head out to grab some refreshments. We both chilled out in the triangle bar and enjoyed a few 35 cents beer while taking advantage of their good wifi. As we likely leaving tomorrow we thought we should enjoy pub street again as we had not really ventured down there much during our say in Siem Reap. As we walked down the street we heard someone calling at us, low and behold it was Darian who we had met in Sihanoukville!! This just keeps happening at the moment. We sat down and chatted about what we had both done over the past week and we all decided to head back to the triangle restaurant to get one more beer in before happy hour finishes. The beer was ice cold and after happy hour we went to a local place for cheap, cheeky frozen marguerita. It made such a refreshing change from the beer! Whilst Laura and Darian chatted I headed out to get some cash which proved to be a very long walk. I even walked past the bank I needed which was very frustrating. I bit flustered, but having the cash, I headed back to the gang for another quick cocktail. We all agreed to meet up again tonight for our last night in Siem Reap, which hopefully would be awesome!
We headed back to the hotel for a quick freshen up when we bumped into Dan and Josie who had been out for the day. We had a chat up on the rooftop terrace and we all agreed to meet up tonight for a few drinks! However first on our agenda was food and shopping at the night market, which Laura was looking forward to more than I was! We went one last time to our usual street stall and ordered a curry with rice and a traditional Khmer Loh Lak, as always it was delicious and afterwards we headed to the night market!
The night markets are huge here and there are loads of them... We had briefly explored a couple but tonight decided to check out the one that was just over the river not far from our hostel. It was immediately apparent it had a chilled our vibe which is always a good thing for bartering. We first stumbled upon some Siem Reap T-shirts and vests which took our fancy. The seller was friendly and was really up for haggling which we both agreed on a good price, so far so good! A couple of shops down Laura spotted some little Buddha statues and fell in love them straight away. I cracked out the haggling skills again and secured another bargain purchase, which included some magnets. When I thought the shopping was all over Laura spotted some bags! There was one that looked like a cement bag, quite random, but Laura loved it and again we managed to get a good price. The bags are made by local people from recycled cement bags and do look pretty cool. She settled on a large tote bag which would come in handy for flights and such. Laura felt really good after the bartering session and we were done just in time to go meet our friends on pub street.
We headed to the Le Tigre pub where Darian was waiting for us and we got a couple of beers as we chatted. It wasn't long before Dan and Josie also joined us and we decided to head next door to the temple bar. Every night the temple bar put on free Cambodian dancing. I got the beers in (shock horror!), which turned out to be ridiculously flat so I had to complain, the replacements were an improvement but not much! Considering they were full price I wasn't impressed. After our flat beers Laura had some photos taken with the dancers and we moved on down the street! Dan suggested going to the 'X Bar' which on first appearance looked really seedy. It turned out to be rooftop bar which had live music going on! The band did look like a bunch of misfits including an Englishman named Richard who looked at least 60 playing the bass guitar. At least the beer wasn't flat and we enjoyed a good yarn whilst sort of listening to the rock music being played. After the set had finished a very drunken looking Richard came up to us and asked if we had seen his wife who was an undercover cop? I think poor Richard had lost the plot. We swiftly left after this and headed to the iconic bar on pub street called 'Angkor What?'
Angkor What is small joint which looked like a derelict building, but in fact is decorated in graffiti. The graffiti mostly consists of customers writing their names on the walls with pens! Music was banging inside and the usual drunken mob with their buckets of overpriced spirit! We stuck to the beers, had a dance and I managed to get Laura one of the T-shirts which she wanted as a souvenir! After a couple of hours dancing and chatting we knew it was time to go as we had to be up in a few hours for our bus to Battambang! We said our farewells to the gang and headed to bed ready for the next part of our adventure!
