Our tallness did not do us a lot of favours on the bus. Neither of us could get particularly comfortable but we did manage to sleep sporadically. The road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap was very bumpy in areas and the jolts would just wake you up anyway. I spent a lot of the night updating the blogs and playing card games on the iPad. We felt sorry for the family underneath us, they had the dad who was taller than me, the mum and their son of about nine wedged in between them, a very tight squeeze. Contrary to what we thought, the bus arrived at the bus station in Siem Reap at roughly 6:30am which was bang on time, shock horror!! The sun was rising and the air was cool as we stepped off the coach and had a welcome stretch. Laura was first off and spotted the man holding my name on a board. He introduced himself as 'Mr Why Not' of Angkor Wonder Hostel and led us to his tuk tuk and we loaded ourselves on. The drive to the hostel took about 10 minutes and the streets were quiet with the just a few Cambodians setting up for the day.
We arrived at our hostel and they kindly allowed us to sleep in a spare room as our room would not ready until later. We were both shattered at this point after Laura had showered we both tried to get some sleep. It was going relatively well for me until a power cut occurred at around 10:00. With the fan going off I got too hot and had to leave the room with Laura being superhuman and not even waking. I managed to snag a couple of lonely planet books, always a bonus and did some casual reading. The power did no return until about 13.30pm at which point Laura was now awake. Our new room was also ready, which to our amazement, was large, had a television and an outside area, all for £5 a night!! We settled in and I showered with the resident gecko in the bathroom, amazing how these things just don't bother you at all now! On the Internet, we confirmed we would meet up with our old friends Todd and Tom (from the maya bay trip) who were in Siem Reap for a couple more days. We set a rendezvous point at 7:30 tonight and we were both very excited about the reunion!
At around 2:30pm we headed out in the heat of Siem Reap, just for trivial purposes, Siem Reap is translated in 'Siam (Thailand) destroyed'. This is in reference to the Khmer managing to liberate it from Thai rule. A funny name really considering how close it is to the Thai border! Anyway, we are about a three minute walk from the main tourist hub. The centre of which is called 'pub street' where all the action happens at night. We decided to look for some cheap local food which proved difficult as we were getting inflated tourist prices everywhere. Mr Why Not advised us to haggle for our food but I thought this was a bit risky, after all they could either do something to it or give you a measly portion! We managed to find a place who did cheap fried noodle and fruit shakes which have a welcome break from the heat! After walking through the pub streets we saw a sign advertisement 35 cent beer, an offer to good to refuse. The bar was quite flashy and the upstairs veranda gave nice views along with swinging sofas. We ordered a couple which went down far too easily in this heat. We headed back to the hostel for a freshen up ready for our meal and drinks tonight.
We headed out and took advantage of the happy hour beer before meeting Todd and Tom! The pub area was starting to come alive and the amount of tourists here is truly staggering. As 7:30pm came and passed we were debating if we had the right restaurant but Tom and Todd strolled in about 10 minutes later. We were in Mexican restaurant funnily enough and Todd recommended the frozen margaritas which turned out to be very tasty! We caught up on what each other had been doing and we learnt Tom has been working a lot with his graphic design projects. They gave us some tips on some temples which were interesting and a little off the beaten track.
The guys recommended a nice Khmer restaurant on pub street they had previously visited where the prices were reasonable. We headed over and sat upstairs over looking the street. I ordered the amok curry and Laura had a Khmer curry which turned out to be a little sweet for her taste, she loves the spice! Mine was tasty and we carried on talking about travelling and how the boys would show us the highlights of Western America if we headed over there.
They look us to a place called the Blue Pumpkin which is a chain of cafes in Cambodia which donate a percentage of their profits to education programmes throughout the country. Tom and Todd ordered ice cream and showed us the 'cool lounge', all white with air conditioning and wi-FI! On leaving the heat just hits you and we then had to say our goodbyes to the boys. We will defiantly stay in touch and hopefully meet up on the States if we ever make it there.
After departing, the music was now in full swing with some of the usual party classics. I said to Laura I was dog tired and need to get a good night sleep in. We headed back to our hostel, turned on the fan and got some well earned rest.
