We had a better night sleep last night except from the occasional dog barking but we couldn't really complain. Laura still had a slightly upset stomach which luckily for her, was quite mild. We quickly headed down to the beach and I had the usual breakfast of banana and bread, always satisfying. Today was going to be our last night at Footprints guesthouse and we still didn't have any onward travel booked at this point. Tonight the guesthouse was putting on an open mic night with a BBQ, which we both knew would be considerably overpriced!
The morning consisted of chatting to the English couple (Sam and Jonathan) who we knew who were thinking about heading over to the nearby island. One of the French workers has tried to sell it to us yesterday but we thought charging $10 each for the boat over was cheeky. Considering they bring the boat over anyway to stock up on supplies. We said we'd think about it but neither of us was that excited over the prospect. We read our books and soon enough I grabbed some stir fry for lunch at next door where we had a beer last night. Turned out that its a small bar called 'greenhouse' with a few beach huts run by a Cambodian guy called Sam and an English guy called Rory. They had cheap beer and a very reasonable menu so thought we'd try it... Well worth it! Delicious and they said they would do Laura an egg and steamed rice (her fave at the moment) for a dollar. Was a really generous portion and with two eggs, footprints said it would be a dollar for the rice and fifty cents per egg! Extortionate. The afternoon did just seem to fly by and nearer towards the evening the guesthouse were starting to set up speakers and going through the sound testing rituals.
As nightfall descended upon us we both freshened our and headed to Rory's bar for our 50 cent happy hour beer. We both opted out of the BBQ due to price and secondly our western food ban for Lent. The couple of beers quickly turned into a few! We got talking to an American couple who were teachers living in Phnom Penh who headed for a quick break down the coast. It is amazing how many couples you meet out here who are teachers, obviously we have missed a trick somewhere! Laura got chatting to two colleagues also based in Phnom Penh (American again) who worked for a charity supporting children I believe. Obviously at the start of the night the serious conversations happen that gradually turn into drunk squit (to use the Norfolk term). This was mostly caused by Laura drinking what she thought was rum that turned out to be whisky (probably a good indication she didn't need the alcohol by then) and me having far too many double vodka and red bull (at stupidly cheap prices). Going around the bar was the usual smell of weed but we both stayed away from that. The open mic night was in full swing next door but the BBQ portions did look pretty tight for my liking. At the bar Rory (the bar man) asked the American chap with us to buy him some more cigarettes from next door and he would give him a free drink! Laura caught whiff of this proposition and went with him and managed to get a free, milky White Russian cocktail (the worst drink to mix others with!!). The rest of night pretty much turned into a blur with silly pics... lots of banter and laughs... I think we staggered in to our room at 3:30am and must of passed out pretty much comatose.........
