So, we have just left Poland and are on the way to the Czech Republic. We only really had one full day in Krakow but we did what we could. We visited the Jewish quarter (which contained the Jewish ghetto just before WW2). We spent the remainder of the afternoon at Oskar Schindler's factory (from Schindler's list). We had dinner at 4pm due to the -10 temperature and retreated to the hotel.
Today we went to Auschwitz and Birkenau. The extreme temperature (-13) made it easier to appreciate the hardship facing prisoners at these concentration camps - despite wearing thick socks and boots our feet were in pain from the cold. The detainees at these camps were forced to stand barefoot in the snow for 12 hours at a time (not allowed to move or react).
As aforementioned, we are heading to the Czech Republic today. The currencies are all starting to get muddled up, and on more than one occasion we have received very strange looks from shopkeepers as we accidentally attempt to pay in multiple currencies. Will keep you all updated!
On a side note, apologies for the quality of the photos uploaded. It has been awhile since I've seen a computer so all photos were taken with the iPod.
